I ended up downgrading my phone right back to 8 and installing the updates again. Now it's all buttery smooth again.

Could I ask a favour of anyone who has updated to 8.1 GDR1 on Dev Preview to try and change their region/lanaguage/speech settings to the US to see if you still get US Cortana instead of UK Cortana please? I just want to know before I update!

Interesting. Will do just now, but it'll take time to process so I'll post again with results.

Edit: Actually no processing time, you can just switch speech region in seconds (last update required a bit more time to install speech as there were no UK files).

But it doesn't sound right. It's an American accent, but I'm not 100% convinced it's proper Cortana like it was. Might've just been tweaked a bit though.

Double edit: Was wrong there, there is a default US accent but I have to do other stuff to get back to Cortana. Will post a proper new post once I've got that again.

Where is that quiet corner thing that's supposed to be part of 8.1?

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

Right - obviously I can't 100% confirm this Mageme, but I changed my phone region and speech language and Cortana now shows a message that says:

"I'm afraid I'm not available to help you in your region with the language you've chosen"

I tried changing speech language to UK but it just gave a different error message telling me to change speech language in settings. So it looks like, now we have a UK Cortana, you're no longer allowed to have proper US Cortana. There might be a way around it though.

Last try - Changed Keyboard, Language, Speech language and Region. That worked! So yes, you can get proper Cortana.

8.1 as an update isn't available yet (it is on a couple of new phones out of the box). You need to download the preview for developers app from the store, sign into the app, and then check for updates in settings>phone update.

At least, I think those were the steps. You might want to check online to be sure.

Yeah just go to the app store. I'm half tempted to download it on my 930.

When I upgraded I needed to log into my windows account using a computer, then create a project, making me a developer. There was a create a project option, so not hard to do. Then the Preview for Developers tool became available. Download and run that. If you want to play with Cortana there were some UK problems with the latest update. Not sure if they're all fixed, but otherwise you have to make the phone language and keyboard American.

    It was fairly straightforward.

Worth Binging to check latest instructions though.

Well it does have a pretty beefy battery. I kind of wish my 930 did tbh, as it started off a fair bit lower than my 920. It seems to have got better recently though, and I'm getting around two days out of a charge.

8.1 should be available for most of the Nokias now, my 1020 got it yesterday and it was one if the last according to the Nokia status page.
Don't know about other brands though.

I quite like my Nokia 520. It was only 80 quid and it seems pretty fast and no real lag to speak of.

I tried to get the 8.1 update but it still says my phone is up to date on 8.0. :|

Until the music app is sorted on 8.1 I'll keep my 925. Other than that I'm very happy with the 930.

Don't know if this is relevant to anyone here but i have bought a Nokia 925. Two reasons; I was happy with my Xperia Z, so despite humming and ahh over the Nokia 930 for 350 was a bit to much.

And then today on the way to the gym i broke my Xperia Z, so its being sent off to repair and i need a quick replacement.

The Nokia 925 is only 185 at Amazon, if i love it then nothing stopping me getting the 930 of course or can just go back to the Z when its repaired. I guess i will upgrade it to 8.1 when it arrives on Wednesday but looking at this thread you guys seam to have problems is it worth holding fire ?

Problems with 8.1? Never had any running the dev preview on my 920 or with retail on my 930. I say go for it. It's very easy to do as well.

Ditto. No problems with 8.1 using dev preview on my 925.

Also, Lumia 1020 on Tesco for 254!! Very tempting (but still gonna go with the 1520!).

Also zero problems here, on a (relatively) cheapo 625, and I felt it was well worth it for the transparent tiles, Cortana and saving apps to SD card which saved me a lot of space on my phone.

My 620 with 8.1 (both the developer software and the official release) has been a bit sluggish at times. For example, when I have the screen locked and enter my code there can be delays of a few seconds before something happens as if it's not responding to the key presses, and generally not quite animating the tiles when changing apps (the way they rotate when you press the back key).

Not had this problem with the official release yet but twice the dev version I've not been able to answer a call as it's refusing to acknowledge a key press.

The overall impression is 8.1 slightly struggling to run on the 620 hardware. Not sure if it'd improves if I turned off the extra see-through tiles options, etc. Might need to experiment with that.

So the 925 arrived yesterday. The initial thoughts are oddly how low resolution it is, never thought I would say that as i thought 1080p was ridiculous. But after a year of the Xperia Z the 768p feels so old.

Its still a great screen and 4.5 is just about big enough. Other impressions are the excellent hardware, it's feels lovely yo use and is very solid. I think only HTC can touch Nokia build quality. Software wise, Windows 8.1 is smooth and quickish most features are their and it does the job.

Whether its a full time replacement for android I don't know yet as the lack of customization may or may not be a problem. I was using a custom ROM on my Z after all. A couple of years ago WP would of felt alot faster than android but it is just not like that these days.

So a Windows version of the HTC One M8 has been revealed. For a fleeting moment I thought that was going to be my next phone, what with the Dot View case, expandable storage, size and general appearance (I do like the on-screen capacitive buttons which you can hide away) but given it some serious thought and I think I'll still go for the 1520.

I think it's great that HTC are continuing to give WP a chance though. What do you guys think? Anyone tempted?

@Mageme Slightly tempted, if it gets released in the UK. I'd consider a 930 but that's a phone from last year only just been released in the UK...so puts me off. I probably want to see the plaform mature a little first though. I'm not crazy about apps so any platform will do for me as long as it has the following:

    - decent web browser
    - decent e-mail app (I tried adding my niece's Gmail account to her Windows phone via the stock e-mail and it wouldn't play ball. Would 'synchronise' for a while and then fail. Constantly.
    - maps app
    - What's app
    - Banking apps (Natwest, Barclays)
    - train times app*

The train times app is convenient but I could live without it by using the website via browser.

I think it'll be good for the platform, but I don't like the look of it - not a fan of the massive chin or spacious forehead that thing's got. Plus, on-screen buttons put me off.

It's definitely a good thing to have more options though.

Use the HERE Transit app for that - it's surprisingly good.
