My girlfriend got a 925 yesterday and loves it. She's been an iPhone users for years and fancied a change, her only demands were it had a bigger screen, a good camera is is easy to use and she could make the screen pink :/|
Only thing is the phone shops were almost going out of there way to stop us getting a windows phone, EE told us 'you don't want a crappy buggy windows phone' Three said the Galaxy S4 mini was better, had a better camera and came with free music, which I pointed out simply wasn't true and 02 said the Sony Experia Z would be better despite telling them what she wanted and needed in a phone.
I first thought all these stores had some sinister motive, when in fact I think it's more dealing with fan boy store staff who earn extra commission on sales. Not a fun experience either way.

I love mine (well it's an 8X, but the same OS). Best phone I've had. Not sure why phone shop staff would be trying to scare you off it.
I've heard a lot of stories like that. I think I've just been lucky with phone shops. I got an Omnia 7 the day after WP7 launched at the Oxford Street Orange Store (no shops where I lived even knew it had been launched), and I told the guy what I wanted and he just sold it to me. He didn't seem particularly enthusiastic, but he wasn't trying to talk me out of it at all. In fact, he said next to nothing which is fine by me!
A few months later, a friend wanted to get an Omnia 7, and he decided to stop in at an Orange store in my town to ask about it. The guy was helpful and said he quite liked WP7. He mentioned that it was a bit short on apps, though the store was growing, which was fair enough. I mentioned I had one and he asked how I was getting on with it.
I got a Lumia 920 last November (a few days after it released), this time in a Phones 4 U in my town, and they were really helpful and enthusiastic about it. They didn't ask if I'd consider any alternatives, or say anything negative about WP, and they went out of their way to make me happy.
I don't know where they got the idea that WP is buggy, as it's rock solid. I can only assume they don't really know anything about the OS, don't care to learn and just default to pushing what they know.
@Anthony_UK The guy I spoke to at 02 could not praise the 925 any more.
Shall never go back to Orange anyways but that does sound like some blind fanboy salesmen you had to deal with.
Also love how despite how much of a bitch Apple tried to make leaving them MS/Nokia have made it piss easy.

It's a great phone, I'm Galaxy S3 user and I'm half tempted to pick up one myself. Love my GS3, but it looks like a mess at times with widgets and apps placed everywhere. I'm just drawn to the clean look of WP8. The camera also on the 925 takes some genuinely impressive shots that blew my GS3 away especially up close.
Might wait for the 1020 for bragging rights and have a closer look
Needed a new phone last month so couldn't wait but I should be up for an upgrade by the time next years phones come out.
A new Lumia phone with a 'big, beautiful' 4.7" screen.
... hold on a moment!
This is what The Verge has to say about this 'big, beautiful' screen:
Nokia has just announced the Lumia 625, a budget Windows Phone with the largest display the company has ever put in a smartphone. The thing is, I think it does look like a beautiful phone, but OH MY GOD ... that screen.
It's a 4.7-inch WVGA (480 x 800) panel with 201ppi, however, which makes it one of the least dense displays we've seen in recent memory. Compounding the screen misery are limited viewing angles and poor contrast, though Nokia does include one of its flagship features with the "super-sensitive touch" technology that allows you to use the touchscreen with gloves on.
A phone for big pockets and a small budget indeed.
The PPI probably won't be too bad - I had a play around with an HTC Titan when it first launched (same screen size/res) and it looked perfectly fine. The contrast and viewing angles are bigger issues, but then this is a cheapo phone.
I went to update my HTC 8S(or X? Or something) and it didn't find the newest update.
Am I already totally obsolete? I hate tech sometimes.
I believe the HTC 8S unfortunately won't be getting the Amber update however, the HTC 8X surely will ... I am sure it was listed as one of the compatible phones on the Windows Phone Central website somewhere.
Oh, and Nokia really shouldn't be doing promotional videos like that, which clearly doesn't show the screen in all its 'glory'.
Well, looks like I have an 8S, then.
Bloody load of bollocks.
@RedSparrows does your phone have a coloured strip across the bottom? If so, that's an 8S. The 8X doesn't have that. I don't know about the update though, sorry! Maybe have a search on WPC and see if you can verify what CharlieStCloud says? (Not that I'm saying he shouldn't be trusted )
@CharlieStCloud You're saying adverts are misleading?? Nooooo! In all seriousness though, they aren't going to advertise it by saying "Hey, the screen sucks, but it's cheap, right??"
The 8X can definitely be updated. Must be an 8S you have, RS.
It's GDR2 we're talking about, right? This WPC thread suggests the 8S will get it, but I've only scanned a few replies.
Yeah, got a nice pretty blue stripe along bottom.
Stupid phones. It can't be more than a couple of years old, surely?
It's less than a year old, wasn't it last November it came out..?

My wife has an 8S and it prompted her to do an update a couple of days ago.
No room on the bloody thing though so haven't done it yet. What takes up all that 'other' space?
Temp files and app data, mostly. You can try using Shrink Storage, but it seems a bit hit or miss whether it works for you. Nokia released an app to clean up the other category, maybe check the HTC section in the store and see if there's an alternative?
Is it not possible to use the picture effects from Nokia Glam Me in other pics?
Good God man, stop tempting me!
I hope they have an updated model next year when I'm up for renewal.
I don't use it myself, but having a phone like this and not having secured an Instagram app yet seems crazy.
I don't use it either, but does Instagram really demand exceptional quality photos? I think most cameras are fine for that kind of thing.
Windows Phone gains ground in Europe
Now has an 8.6 market share in the UK.

Currently own a nexus 4 but grabbed an 8X (blue) from prepaymania earlier for £167 delivered. Black was out of stock but will get a case if I think the blue colour is too funky for me.
Very happy with Android but not touched WM since 6.5 so thought I'd give it a whirl. I'll keep hold of my N4 just incase its not for me.
My brother has a Nexus 4 and his girlfriend has a HTC 8X (also blue!) and they both like their phones in different ways.
... wonder how you'll get on with your new phone which, at a shy under £170, is a bit of a bargain me thinks.
Does anyone else notice how shit push notifications are on windows phone 8? They're either delayed by about a year or they never happen.
Whatsapp has been updated to tell you when it detects a problem with notifications and it's always telling me there's a problem and I should restart my phone.
I restart it's fine for a while and then it happens again.
Is it just my phone or is this a retarded bug of the OS?
Toast notifications for various apps can be very flaky. Words With Friends never fails to notify me, but Alphajax gave up a long time ago, for example.
Definitely something that needs addressing in one of the next updates.
