So it's my 2 year anniversary on Tuesday, and traditionally (er last year) we haven't done big presents, just a small token like a funny tshirt or book or something. This year the mrs hinted that i hadn't ever bought her flowers, so i have ordered her some flowers to get delivered (embarassingly) to work.

Thing that i dont understand is, why do women like flowers so much!? for me its a total cop out present, no thought going into it at all - i buy my mum flowers on mothers day because i can't think of anything else to get her.

They die after a week and you are left with nothing but a vase full of droopy crap.

    I do not understand.

They look nice in a room, and can smell nice too.
I buy my wife flowers every week - as part of the weekly shopping. It's not really a romantic gesture, but she appreciates it, and I've got used to having flowers around the house. It's nice.

It's because droopy and crap remind her of your first date.

Give yourself £5 or ½ gig, you're worth it.

Who says just women like flowers?

One of my favourite things in life is to walk amongst the flowers in the rose garden by my house after a long run. It's amazing. The other half and I routinely buy each other flowers. The look nice, smell nice, remind you of nature, and giving them is a nice gesture. Don't double-down and write a poem to accompany your gift though.

They don't just like any flowers. Petrol station flowers are distinctly looked down upon. From this I determine that it's kind of about how much you spent and that you went out of your way to a proper florist.

    They look like vaginas.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

    @THFourteen

Hey man - you've just reminded me of the bunch of red roses that I sent to an ex's workplace back in 2009. It certainly had the desired effect.

Flowers represent thought and feeling. It's a gesture. The act of presenting the flowers, whether it's the setting the place, the time, the words that you say. The presentation, the colour, the smell, etc.

I decided to use a website to post a bunch of red roses to my 'date's workplace, as in conversation we had talked about where she worked, and what she did. I had visited that (obscure) building in Salford during one of my past work contracts, and knew exactly where it was.

I sent the roses with a really nice note about how she made me so happy. The roses themselves are 'just flowers' or whatever, but the gesture is massive, the surprise at receiving them is massive, the note attached is very significant. In addition - sending it to her workplace would have made all of her female co-workers talk about it, and some of them would be jealous - because no man had sent them red roses in such a surprise gesture like that. There was no reason. It wasn't valentines day.

Try it sometime, but not especially straight away with flowers, as it's obvious now that she's hinted. Definitely include flowers with your anniversary gift though, but also - give surprise presents to your girl/woman completely out of the blue. Silly little things like you've mentioned, with a little note attached.

Look at me - posting like I'm the love doctor, despite being single for the vast majority of this year so far!

It's pleasing to speak on this topic, because it reminds me of describing the appeal of Apple design to non-techies and creatives, and why some of their elegance and design gestures make technology a pleasure rather than a pest to use. That's why they'll pay a premium.

Hope this helps! I've not read anyone else's replies.

It seems the flowers question is settled then.

So now can we move on to why they like cuddly toys? And what's with liking pink things?

Er... Interflora for a kick off, but they're expensive, so Google around as there are cheaper ones.

Often it's about how much money you spent on it and about the tribute, the gesture. You pay for her to be around, go figure ;)

Flowers are a way for ugly men to get laid. Me I just show the good lady my cock, they swoon, I throw them over my shoulder and take them out back to the skewering room.

Also - look at that image. Looking at natural things like flowers and puppies evokes the sort of response in women that us guys get (sort of) when looking at a beautiful woman.

Looking at natural colours and shapes is also a massive stress reliever. It makes us calm and happy.

Rather than use web based flower sending services and their over inflated prices, just do what they do and call the florist nearest the recipients address. That way you'll cut out the commission, and get a much better bouquet for the same price.

He was a harsh abuser. I bested him with the fire poker in the end though.
