Registered 11 years agoFan isn't too bad really, the drive seeking though is bloody noisy and it shows there's only a thin bit of plastic above the drive to act as audio baffling.
Certainly worth the 100 quid I paid for it though. This space left intentionally blank.

Registered 10 years agoSo the noise for you is only bad when you run a title off a disc? Similar to how it takes the 360 a few minutes to stop reading offf the disc?XBL: rolemodel86 PSN: Syrette86

Registered 11 years agoSeems a lot louder than a 360 when seeking, also it's game dependent in how much seeking it does obviously and it's not just the drive spinning it's the head moving around to find data.
I'm rather glad most of the games I'm playing are from PS+ so are installed on my hard drive. This space left intentionally blank.

The PS3 can be a noisy fucker. I recently played MW3 on it. The console must have been reading the disc the whole time I played. Check YouTube vids and you will see what I mean.

On the other hand I have also recently played Resistance3 on it with no issues whatsoever.
My slim I'd defo louder than my 360 slim when reading discs"Duffman is thrusting in the direction of the problem! Oh, yeah!"

If you could get a first gen Slim (as in the 120Gb or 250Gb models), they're probably the quietest PS3's made. 160Gb and 320Gb models have horrible, clunky sounding optical drives, while the fans stop abruptly.
PS3s also do (from my experience) only partial installs. A lot of games still seek data, ranging from the odd time (usually between level loads) to constantly. I Picked up RDR at the weekend, and despite installing over a Gb of data, the lens was constantly seeking (par for the course with an open world) to the point where I couldn't enjoy it. As of today I'm also a 360 owner and there is quite some difference with the games installed to that.Girl, you thought he was a man, but he was a muffin.

Finding a Slim (of any size) doesn't appear to be easy or cheap. Not a surprise given Sony have moved on to the subject of this thread.XBL: rolemodel86 PSN: Syrette86

Registered 7 years agoI believe the drive noise in the super slim is overrated.
It's not like you can hear the disc spin at 10 000 rpm (which it doesn't); it's just the heads movement that you hear. It's comparable to the noise the PS2 slim makes.

Registered 6 years agoHow is the optical drive and fan noise when playing a DVD or Blu-Ray? Im not so bothered about it being noticeable during gaming, but when Im watching a movie I need it to be almost silent, I find it incredibly annoying otherwise.
Thanks in advance. -

Registered 7 years agoI've only watched a blu-ray. The fan noise is pretty quited (XMB quiet, not game not-so-quiet) and the drive makes no noise at all, seeing as it's spinning very slowly and not moving the head very much.PSN: DonOsito

Registered 6 years agoThats what I wanted to hear. I only want a PS3 for Blu-Ray and DVD playback in the living room along with iPlayer and Netflix. Also, so I can use my Play TV again rather than buy a DVR (I sold my 60GB launch model to a friend as I never used BC, and it was basically a 200w DVD player).
A good WiFi BluRay player costs at least £90, so for all the extra functionality, I feel its worth getting a PS3. Just got to wait for it to come down in price a little bit. -

Registered 7 years agoI'd say it'd be pretty crap as a pure blu-ray player, tbh.

Registered 6 years agoWell I remember thinking the picture quality was excellent on my old launch PS3, and I have a Sony s390 (from memory) WiFi Blu-Ray player in my bedroom, and the picture quality again is excellent in my opinion.
Im not one of those peoples who masturbates over his home theatre setup, I just want one box that does lots of things well. I cant imagine Sony's flagship is "pretty crap as a blu-ray player" compared to the model in my bedroom, for example, or even a significantly more expensive machine. -

Registered 7 years agoWhy not just get a blu-ray player, if you're not going to play any games anyway? It'll be a bit cheaper and it'll probably use less power, too.PSN: DonOsito

Registered 6 years agoWell I figured it would save me buying a DVR as I have a Play TV laying around gathering dust.

I had always heard that the ps3 is actually comparable to a higher end blu ray player. Certainly has benefitted from the regular firmware updates and comprehensive tweaking menus.

What makes you say that its crap? Genuinely interested. -

I'm glad someone is still using Play TV out there, I finally bailed on it a few months ago, I do miss being able to transfer "taped" progs and films to my pc/usb key.

I meant that if it's bought only in order to watch blu-rays, it would surely be better to just get a dedicated player. I'm not saying it's not good at playing films, but the hassle of using the pad (unless you buy the optional remote), navigating the XMB, etc. makes it less preferable IMO.dominalien wrote:

He then mentioned he wanted to use it as a PVR, so fair enough. I still believe it's a waste..gif)

@dominalien I do have a remote laying around here somewhere. I know what you mean though about it being a waste, I mean I will be getting a PS4 soon after launch I reckon. I did recently buy a Sony BDP S 390 and its great, cost £90, but I cant find another one new anywhere for less than £140 now 6 weeks later. It seems if you wanted a compact, neat-looking WiFi blu-ray player that was it, all the other models either dont have wifi, or are almost £200. Its crazy, I thought they wanted to increase adoption.
