    Nooooo, God. Whhhhhhy?! etc. etc.

Okay, I haven't bought an issue for a good decade or so, but I still found it rather upsetting to hear that DC Thomson will be burying this comic before the end of the year.

I wonder if my fan-club membership is still valid?

edit: okay, it won't allow me to cut and paste a link ('FORBIDDEN', according to the Gods of Eurogamer), so you'll just have to Google it yourself you lazy little sod.

Yup. Beano > Dandy. Shame for Dundee though.

It's a shame, until you see what the current Desperate Dan looks like... Then it all kind of makes sense.

Oh dear - it's all gone a little too 'Cartoon Network We-So-Kooky' for my liking.

The Dandy and Beano were good because they were inherently old fashioned. Their identity is a complete mess now.

As some of you may know, I have travelled through time from the year 1974. I read the Beano back in the early 80's - and even then it was a bit shit and old-fashioned.
The Beano and Dandy were doomed as soon as the first webcomic hit the internet. I think I read yesterday the Dandy was down to 8000 circulation; it's a credit to their tenacity that they were still staggering along for this long, trying desperate measures like "Dandy Xtreme". They don't even have comics geeks to sell to like Marvel and DC do.

Speaking of which, Marvel and DC print comics are doomed too; they're not really attracting new readers, just the same dwindling pool of ageing comics geeks (who at least have a bit more disposable income these days, but also have a lot more things to spend it on and are going to get bored).
They're a bit like those fish in the nature documentaries, in a slowly shrinking pool of water under the hot African sun. But with comics.

Always a shame when an institution bites the dust. Even worse to see it lying in the gutter.
The price point (1.99!!!) and lack of faith in its IP was shocking.

RIP. I'm sure the Beano will join it in the next 10 years.

    @caligari

I thought nothing final had been decided yet? That's what they said on the new report on this I watched yesterday anyway.

Even if the comic itself folds, the IP will live on - whether it's through newspaper strips, online, trades, etc. The IP is far more valuable than the comic they're contained in, and when you look at how the comic itself has been handled - the failure to capitalise on the internet, the steadfast refusal to move with the times, etc - I struggle to find a huge amount of sympathy for their predicament (similarly to how the newspapers bemoan their dwindling circulation).

I used to read my Mum's old Dandy and Beano annuals whilst staying over at my Nan's place. I loved the 'Jocks and Geordies' strips - it always confused the hell out of me, though - what the f*ck is a 'Geordie'?

'Bully Beef and Chips' was always a favourite of mine - there's a 1991 issue out there somewhere, complete with my reader's 'star prize' doodle of Chips boiling Bully Beef alive in a large Cannibal-style pot. Oh, such innocent times.

I used to buy a ton of these things when I was a kid (whilst running through the war-torn streets with a loaf of Hovis under one arm) - The Beano, Buster, Big Comic, Funny Fortnightly, Beezer and Topper, Whizzer and Chips (unfortunately I was never really cool enough for 2000AD). It really is a bit of a shame that this kind of UK style/humour is going to be forever lost under a pile of soulless superhero/anime imitations.

Give me Bananaman over Batman, anyday.

I bet the Bananaman live-action film wouldn't have continuity problems and silly voices.

I picked up the mini Dan Dare series by Garth Ennis a few days ago. Any good? I could find out myself by actually reading the things, but I no longer have anyone around to turn the pages for me.

edit: sorry, I mean a 'mini-series' involving Dan Dare - not a 'miniature Dan Dare' series...although that would be great.

Not actually read it, sorry! I'm having nerdgasms though just thinking about an Ennis/Dan Dare combo.

Well it would be wrong, then. As wrong as casting Keanu Reeves as John Constantine.

I've always loved the Bananaman style of humour. My particular favourite was Dangermouse - I remember the end of the giant teapot episode, where Dangermouse was explaining he'd escaped the moon by throwing the giant teapot lid towards Earth and jumping on.

Colonel: That doesn't make sense, DM.
    Dangermouse: It's only a cartoon.

Did anyone read the Dan Dare series in Revolver, back in the 90s?
It was proper dystopian, like (and the thinnest-veiled of thinly veiled heavy-handed attacks on Thatcherism). Good though.

Meh. Never a fan of the Dandy beyond the odd bit of desperate dan. But tell me the Bash Street Kids in the Beano are still going strong?

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

While the Dandy always played second fiddle to the Beano for me, I did still enjoy it.
Used to get the Summer Specials for both as a start of holiday treat for me and my brother to read in the car on the way to France...
    Ahhh, great days! :)

I always much preferred the Beano in my youth. Used to LOVE getting the annuals at Christmas too!

As I got a little older though, I ended up loving Whizzer and Chips and Buster.
