Still though, I will try milk in first next time.
Only really matters if you're pouring from a pot. Putting milk in first makes the tea slightly sweeter.

tbh I really don't know what causes the scum. I'd just assumed it was leaving tea to stew on occasion. Are the cups you use completely clean? No remnants of washing-up liquid or dishwasher stuff left on them? I sometimes warm the cup with a splash of hot water before I put anything in, but I don't know if it prevents the scum.

This post is unsuitable for those with a high rumour-sensitivity.

This. It makes a big difference to the quality of your cuppa. I find that coffee is opposite though. Milk in after or it tastes worse, the granules don't mix in very well.

Use fresh water every time you boil the kettle. Never reboil the water

For a man that hates multinational corporations you don't seem to have any problems buying their products.

You know that filthy layer of grime that appears on the top of your tea? Like an oil slick floating on the surface of your beautifully delicate drink. How do I get rid of it?
Erm, I can honestly say I've never had that - and I've lived all over the place, including London. Perhaps your mugs aren't very clean?

Yeah, if you want to rack up your water and electricity bill. Most modern kettles have a switch on them that tells them to keep the water at about 80%, which is more economical than reboiling cold water all the time (assuming you know you're going to want more than one cup of tea through the course of the day).

Aaron apparently lives in London so fluoride isn't something to worry about, Thames Water don't flouridify their supply.

If you're using mineral water madgod, this won't solve any problems either as it's also hard.

Can't beat it for builders tea imo. Not one for airy fairy tea though. Now Tetley's, that is a rank tea.

Twinnings English Breakfast is nice, not a fan of the Everyday though. Yorkshire is good strong stuff too.

What are you thanking me for?

I'm just glad that someone as concerned about the safety domestic water supplies and any potential additives has found an alternative in bottled water, ignorant to the risks of acetaldehydes leaching into the water during long term storage of a solvent like water in PET plastic bottles. :-)

Just drop about 90ml's of white wine vinegar into each cup and it takes care of it.

Also if you use a dishwasher, try rinsing the cup out with hot water first to get rid of the leftover detergent and rinse aid and shiny-izer-5000 and so on.

80% of what? 80% of 100 degrees celcius? Or something else? Interesting, though no kettle I've seen has ever had that function.

I don't know why, but tea manufacturers do recommend you don't reboil water for tea. I guess it's something to do with dissolved gases, but I don't really know - and personally I reboil water all the time and it tastes fine to me.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

One reboil you can get away with, any more and the water starts to taste quite metallic. And yeah, all kettles cool, unless you've got an urn or one of those swish instant hot water things. /wants
