So, COD is the joke announcement, right? It has to be, because it's not actually an announcement at all. It's something we already knew about from other sources, about a game we already knew exists. That's not a secret, so it can't be that. What is it, seriously?

Oh dear. Pretty much confirms to me that the whole industry revolves around CoD nowadays. Expect 4 months of swooning and gushing from the fickle videogame media at the 'new and radical changes' (aka: you unlock some different stuff)

And only a week after I watched the trailer for it on youtube.

Printed magazines are clearly catching up again.

The fact that the entire Internet seems to have said the same thing (ie fuck off) will hopefully send them a message.

To our Australian and New Zealand readers,

Last week I posted an update on this Facebook page explaining why I hadn't shown the cover of our upcoming issue as I'd usually do. I had organised to be part of the worldwide reveal for something I was not allowed to talk about and this small update was supposed to just build a little excitement amongst our local readers and nothing more - it wasn't intended to go further than this page. Instead it went viral and "the internet" decided to turn it into something it was not - gamers are truly passionate people.

Unfortunately, after promising me on multiple occasions that nothing would be revealed about the Call of Duty: Black Ops II multiplayer until the time our cover went up, Treyarch/Activision released a trailer a week in advance followed by a number of other announcements. So what started as a build-up to this hands-on/trailer reveal, has ended up being a build-up to something you already knew about. I would have told you straight away, but as far as Treyarch/Activision were concerned the trailer wasn't a reveal and in their minds I'd be breaking embargo.

I was looking forward to enjoying this reveal with Australian gamers, but in something I can only describe as a painfully stressful week, the occasion has been taken away from us and instead I have been dreading this moment. Due to the way this cover reveal built up in a lot of people's minds, I feel like I've let you down and for that I am sorry. I can assure you there is considerably more to learn from the article than what you saw in the trailer and hopefully those of you who are not interested in CoD will still enjoy the issue's other 92 pages of content.

That's just for the antipodeans - he's keeping the real secret from us. I bet it's eternal life or a perpetual motion engine or something.

Are they allowed to play CoD in Australia? Do they replace all the enemies with cartoon kangaroos in boxing gloves?

Lastly, I am gay, disabled, and a liberal.

Ok, sowhy didn't he warn people in advance without mentioning the game in question?

Something like "as an advance warning, while I'm still unable to tell everyone which game is featuring on our cover, due to circumstances beyond our control I feel I should warn you that the game itself has already been announced and you will be aware of its existence. The reveal concerns a certain aspect of that game that has not yet been discussed in detail". Something like that wouldhave cooled the fires of speculation whilst also satisfying the terms of the embargo.

Maybe it's all a double bluff - maybe Sony will announce tonight that Half Life 3 is coming to the PS4 and is playable on the show floor at GamesCom.

    Maybe.

Also (as it's still not too late for something cool to be revealed today), does anyone know if there's a live stream of the Sony Gamescom Conference at 6pm?

He states that that would have breached the embargo. Perfectly reasonable explanation and people need to get over it. Feel slightly bad for him!

It's the fact that such a big deal was made of it all in the first place. For me it seemed to be pointing towards something a lot more exciting and at the very least a game we didn't already know about. But I suppose nowadays 'Massive Worldwide Reveal' means unveiling what pointless shit you can unlock in this year's CoD. Pretty sad to see.
