    My all time best TV series are as follows:

    1. The Wire;
    2. Firefly;
    3. Battlestar Galactica;
    4. Breaking Bad;
    5. Deadwood.

    Apart from the Wire, which is number 1 on any level you care to mention, it was very difficult to rank them, because some are technically better, or have better acting, while others are simply more entertaining or have more interesting characters or worlds...

    The runner-ups are:

    * Spaced;
    * Day-break;
    * Flash-forward;
    * Game of Thrones;
    * Malcolm in the Middle.

    Also, the final list! TV series, certain seasons of which were awesome:

    Lost; (was great until the David Lynch effect kicked in...)
    Scrubs; (Seasons 1-4 were genuine comedy gold, but sadly...)
    Dexter; (Seasons 1 and 2 were absolutely legend, but now it's a fuckin' joke...)

    The Wire
    The Sopranos
    Breaking Bad
    The West Wing
    Mad Men

    Deadwood's first season was spectacular, it's second was very good, and its third was garbage. I can see why it was cancelled. That whole acting troupe storyline/characters killed the show. Honourable mentions to Six feet under, BSG, GoT and a few others. Maybe Boardwalk Empire will sneak on there, if it keeps up the standard of season three.

    Mad Men
    West Wing
    Twin Peaks
    Life On Mars
    American Gothic (only 1 series, but it was brilliant)

    Honourable mentions: Yes, Minister; House of Cards (original uk version); The Hour; and the utterly fantastic Deep Space 9, easily one of the best sci-fi shows ever made.

    I'm not sure I can narrow it down to just five but I'll try:

    I'm Alan Partridge
    Twin Peaks
    Arrested Development
    The Day Today
    X-Files

    Honourable mentions to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Firefly, Spaced, Battlestar Galactica, Brass Eye, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Blackadder, Buffy The Vampire Slayer... I'll stop here to be honest as this list could go on and on. I can often rotate these in for some of the ones on the list depending on my mood.

    Does a mini-series count?

    If so, I'm including Das Boot, since it's pretty much one of the best things I have ever watched on TV.

    Das Boot
    The Sopranos
    Spaced
    Blackadder 2
    Band of Brothers

    Blimey reading this thread has reminded me of some great TV and makes the list really hard. Some shows sadly "jump the shark" and carry on way too long but if I had to say I would go

    Braking bad
    House of cards (near perfect)
    Blackadder
    Phoenix nights
    Battlestar galactica (despite the final 2 seasons, it had built up enough credit in my book to get away with them)

    Honourable mentions-
    Dexter
    My name is earl
    Spaced
    Alan partridge (all of them)
    The Office
    Peep show

    Sadly shows which jumped the shark and ruined themselves
    The Simpsons
    Lost
    Heroes
    Scrubs
    Red dwarf

    Guess its a fine line for producers and writers to walk between creating great TV and stretching things out so they no longer resemble the original programme and the reason every one loves them

    Mad Men
    The Simpsons
    The Thick Of It
