UPC actually advertise the speeds (they do specify "up to" as well but not so prominently and they have to cover their arses) as you absolutely should be acheiving the very damn near the actual advertised speed, there really is no reason that you should not be.

ADSL providers do advertise speeds of "up to" 8 or 24Mbps in some areas but that is dependant on contention and loads of other factors much more inherent in that type of technology.

Sounds like there is something wrong with the service you are getting and I would advise calling customer support. you should be getting 2MBper second+ download easily.

Enjoy your four-quid pints with English heifers, suckers! :-P
I dread going back to the UK and being expected to pay so much for such shit beer. No question, good beer can be found in the UK, but that's the problem - you have to look for it. Even the beer which they think is a bit rubbish here tastes so much better than our normal stuff.

Calling customer support? Are you serious:) With UPC (esp. former NTL) I go by the credo 'if it ain't broke don't fix it';)

I'd say it's got more to do with peak times/living in a densely populated area... and Netflix must've something to do with the drop in performance back then as it's pretty stable now. Just not as fast as advertised and yes they do say 'up-to' to be off the hook when I would try to enquire about the speed I'm getting.. at least it's stable, hardly ever the connection drops so I'll give'em that.

Fair enough, I know i try to squeeze every last bit of speed out of mine. I'm just about to upgrade my homeplugs to utilise the full download speed throughout the house.

Then again I'm paying silly money for this internet/TV combo so there's obviously something wrong with me :D

    @Geesh

Out of interest, are you working on a secondment/limited time contract there? How is life there in general? My GF is from another Eastern European country but I couldn't face moving there as I couldn't put up with the level of corruption and neglect, nothing gets done unless you know someone or pay someone off.

I'm asking as I'm considering moving country and am trying to figure out what the alternatives are. Never really thought about the Czech Rep. before but sounds interesting.

Yeah think I'm just too lazy for trying to get some improvements (which I reckon would be hard enough work as I hate dealing with hopeless customer service staff), as it currently doesn't impact me much at all. If I'd be constantly streaming vid that'd be a different story!

Which country is she from? Bratislava is a bit funny in terms of neglect, corruption et. al in my experience.

I'm living in a block of flats in an area called Petr˛alka, which is one of the biggest collections of Communist style blocks of flats in the world. Despite this, everyone is very civil and it feels safe. The building and the area is a bit of a tip though, grass growing wildly, large spaces of crumbling concrete serving no purpose and that kind of thing. So yeah, not pretty.

Getting things done is no problem, at least for we needed. Landlord is professional and open, internet was quickly set up, bus services run frequently and are dirt cheap, shops are everywhere and again very cheap. I'm sure there is corruption everywhere, especially in politics but we haven't experienced it.

But this is the capital, and before this we weren't in her home village called Sobrance and that was a bit of a shithole. Border town with Ukraine, got charged more because they recognised I was foreign, rubbish transport, streets completely falling apart.

So I guess if you're worried, just stick to the big cities.

She's Romanian but living abroad for several years now. What you describe sounds quite familiar (from my visits in her hometown Cluj, which to be fair ain't as bad as you'd think and has some nice aspects to it and her family is pretty well off, other parts of the country are a LOT worse though).

And yes agree with sticking to cities, for various reasons not just the ones you mentioned (eg. jobs/infrastructure/mentality etc.).

I'm on the UPC 50mb broadband package, and oooohhhh boy, is it ever a hefty package. There's a lot to sink your teeth into, so to speak. Quite the payload coming out of the wired connection, that's for sure.

@Geesh Not really. £15 per month for something on a Gigabit line. Ask that bad boy for 10 somethings and they'll be ready in less than a few minutes.

Then you SFTP them off at your leisure without needing to leave machines on to reshare or whatever. By the time they're off they're already reseeded. And you've not done any filesharing on your network connection, just SFTP.

    I'm a grumpy bastard.
