A friend turned me on to this very useful / interesting / funny webpage, the Food Standards Agency Website:

    http://ratings.food.gov.uk/

You can look up the Food Hygiene Rating given to most places that sell food in the UK on a scale of 0-5, this includes shops, supermarkets, take aways, pubs, restaurants and hotels.

The search tools are decent, you can quickly search for establishments in your town or postcode that have a rating of 2 or less (2 is unsatisfactory), so you know which kebab shops and burger joint / kfc's are dodgy!

I'm happy to find the pubs and restaurants I like to eat out in have ratings of 4-5, and the kebab shop I like to go in for kebabs on the way home from a night out has a rating of 3 (generally satisfactory), and the kebab shop next door that sells cheaper kebabs that I only went in once has been rated 1- Major Improvements Needed!

There's a few surprises as well, some local places I thought were decent, well kept or whatever have below satisfactory ratings.

My favourite is "Improvement required" - not surprised, as it's manky, just very tasty too :)

1 for my usual Indian restaurant.

Do you reckon that means pubes?

    I think it means pubes.

Swapped to one down the street rated a 5.

Ironically the one pub in my town to get a 1 rating is also by the far the most popular. It really surprises me as it looks very upmarket and clean inside and it's a chain pub (Ember Inns).

1 means not just pubes, but ginger pubes. A 5 guarantees all blond pubes, and not strawberry blond.

The search hasn't found any of my regular eateries yet, so they're probably registered under a different name. Will have to try addresses.

None of my local ones appear at all. That just means someone didn't provide the details to the site, right? They aren't all unlicensed, unsafe diarrhoea vendors, are they? It's strange too, they're all on the one street, and that is the only street that displays none.

When you order a kebab from one of those places, you actually get minced FSA inspector elephant penis meat. Which is quite healthy as it's high in protein and generally pretty lean.

I just went through all the take aways on hungry house that deliever to me and they are all horrible!!! The best one is 3! In fact nearly all the take outs I have seen in this area have terrible ratings. The Chinese that I normally order from is a 1 :( A part of me wishes I hadn't looked, but it's out there now lol

Good to see the superb Bishopston Fish Bar with a 5... although I knew that since anywhere with a 5 will normally have it on a wall you can actually see it :p

Tried eight really nice pubs, three fish and chip shops, four chinese takeaways and seven restaurants, all in the Kent area, all quite well known (well the restaurants and pubs anyway). Not one was found.

Seems like they either need to up the ante in Kent, or sort out the search.

Eugh. My regular Chinese has a 0 rating. Their kitchen must be grotty as fuck. I always thought it was spot on as the front of the shop is immaculate with couches for while you wait, a TV, the works. Shame they apparently blew the shop's budget on the wrong part of it.

Some results I wasn't expecting... a very respectable Vietnamese restaurant near me that's won several awards only has 1 star 0_o

For people having trouble searching by name, try just searching by your town instead.

All of mine are either 4 or 5, and there's one 3 (our usual Chinese). Somehow, I expected less of Croydon...

I did. In a town with a population of nearly 50000, with over 25 takeaways that I can think of from memory (easily far more than that, probably double or triple), about 40 pubs, maybe more, and I can count from memory about 18 restaurants, we have a grand total of...three on the FSA website. Brilliant!

Even the amazing restaurant that charges 80 for a three course dinner (never eaten there, obvious reasons, but it's got lots of awards) isn't on the website.

Zero. How are you not dead? A indian cafe come resturant that my friend worked in (apparently places like these don't have a clue what min wage is) was similar - the front all posh and stuff, the kitchen another story! He invited me into the back one time, blergh, just buckets of stale curry paste and a bucket of rancid smelling chicken with flyes buzzing around.

What happens is the shop receive a delivery of frozen chicken in the morning & leave the bucket open to defrost, whack chicken in oil with onions and chuck some paste in that's it. If you order food in the night then you'll get the worse chicken/meat.

Haha. That sounds fucking awful. Glad that website was posted, some really grim places I thought were decent on the list. It actually seems to be the less popular places that have the best ratings for my town. At least I know where I can order without contracting E-Coli or something now.

Yeah, very good link. It's on my bookmarks now. Next time the OH asks if I want a takeaway, I'll be cross-referencing all his suggestions :-D

Could be a good bartering tool if you ever end up eating at a grotty place.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

Remember a pretty dodgy looking Indian takeaway that had a Chinese takeaway in not much more than a cupboard in the back.. they don't have a rating, guess they were shut when the inspectors were coming round, surprisingly. My go to places for kebabs and pizza both scored 5 :)

I just checked, the establishment scores a 1 ...I would truly dread to see a zero!

Takeaway pizza is off the menu for good, all the local places that do pizza got a 0 or 1. I'm feeling slightly ill just thinking about what the toppings may have been.

Don't forget to look at the date of the FSA inspection. One of the places by us is decent but they have a 3 rating from a year or so ago. They've upped their game since :)

@jellyhead that makes it worse, it looks like the inspectors swept through the whole of our town within the past 3 months!

Also, the rating doesn't necessarily mean the place is manky. They just might not have the right processes in place (forms, signage, training etc). This is particularly the case with takeaways as they're often set up without knowing any of this.
