You can look up the Food Hygiene Rating given to most places that sell food in the UK on a scale of 0-5, this includes shops, supermarkets, take aways, pubs, restaurants and hotels.
The search tools are decent, you can quickly search for establishments in your town or postcode that have a rating of 2 or less (2 is unsatisfactory), so you know which kebab shops and burger joint / kfc's are dodgy!
I'm happy to find the pubs and restaurants I like to eat out in have ratings of 4-5, and the kebab shop I like to go in for kebabs on the way home from a night out has a rating of 3 (generally satisfactory), and the kebab shop next door that sells cheaper kebabs that I only went in once has been rated 1- Major Improvements Needed!
There's a few surprises as well, some local places I thought were decent, well kept or whatever have below satisfactory ratings.

A part of me wishes I hadn't looked, but it's out there now lol
