    From IGN

Screening at Comic-Con, FOX's new crime drama The Following stars Kevin Bacon as an alcoholic former FBI agent suddenly back on the trail of a serial killer when Joe Carroll, the murderer he became famous for capturing (he literally wrote the book on him) escapes from prison. It soon becomes apparent that while incarcerated, Carroll built up a cult-like army of followers who will do whatever he requires of them.

The chilling pilot of The Following is full of gory violence and startling twists. In fact, if you have any interest in watching this show I implore you to avoid spoilers at all costs. The shocks are that satisfying. The writing is sharp and even manages to find occasional mirth amid the mayhem, a hallmark of creator Kevin Williamson (Scream). I was also impressed with the way characters imparted the vast amount of backstory one often finds in a pilot in a way that felt natural.

This series if not for the feint of heart, however. If there's ever been a bloodier show on network television, I don't remember it. Though much of the violence is implied, we see plenty of the grisly aftermath. The crowd at Comic Con was gasping and yelping with fear throughout the show, which was grounded by Bacon's subtle, captivating performance as the tormented Ryan Hardy. In contrast, James Purefoy (Rome) was deliciously over-the-top as the charismatic killer.

When asked why he chose to do television during the brief Q&A after the screening, Bacon said that he'd been looking for a series for some time, particularly if he could play a heroic character for a change after playing several movie villains (including in X-Men: First Class). He's looking forward to playing Hardy, who's made mistakes and feels responsible for the victims he's unable to save. Williamson sees the core of the show as the twisted obsession between the killer and the cop, who both happen to be in love with Carroll's wife, played by Natalie Zea (Justified).

Thread title was more interesting than the contents of said thread. I thought for a second Kevin Bacon was part of a murderous cult.

Never before in the history of EG has a thread promised so much and delivered so little.

I too expected a reality TV show.

I lurk. If I've spoken to you, I'm either impassioned, or drunk.

The show sounds good but I also think fletch7100 has let us all down badly with that title.

    For shame.

True. Shame on you for not just putting the name of the show in the thread title and then using your own words to describe it.

I do have some interest in the show though, Purefoy is usually good value.

Weird thread title. it's not called 'The FBI Following'.

Anyway, first ep has been on in the US of Stateside, I think. Anyone seen and able to report back?
