I simultaneously liked and didn't like the trailer. I liked it because the finished film is evidently going to be cheesy as hell and not really take itself seriously, which is exactly what's needed for something like this (for one thing - Charlie Day as a scientist. Immediate moment of "this is taking the piss" ). I disliked it because that trailer almost took itself too seriously - I half expected the Inception BWAAAAAA halfway through. Which is a paradox and an annoying trend of modern trailers to mis-sell the film.

I think it's a genuine concern, though. Aside from being terrible films regardless, the thing that really fucked over Transformers was because it never knew whether it was trying to be an action comedy or some heavy pathos and gravitas filled gritty sci-fi war film. But Del Toro does have track record with the Hellboy films, which were pretty well balanced in that respect.

I also completely forgot that the first trailer did indeed have the Inception BWAAAA throughout.

why would you use a boat as a weapon? that's like using a tube of smarties as a sword :)

It was ship. Ships are perfectly functional as weapons and bloody hurt I reckon.

When a film generates quotes like that, you know it's a must-watch.

I hope there's a line of dialogue along the lines of "ramming speed" as the big stompy robot shoves a ship into the monster's face.

    Looks completely and utterly silly.

    Also awesome.

I think the moment the chopper drops the two giant-o-robot men in the ocean there was a hint of BWAAAAA for a split second.

Also ... why on earth would you need two people to steer this thing? That just seems a bit ... random.

Looks like something to watch whilst very stoned.

Presumably it'll have a "twist" based on memory merging where it turns out one guy is actually a bad guy and murdered the other guy's father/shot his wife/blew up an orphanage blah blah blah.

I missed that. Isn't that a literal impossibility? Like if someone said "draw a picture of a cat" you wouldn't invent a completely new cat, it'd be pulled from your subconscious by images of cats you already knew.

    Or something.

    Cats.

I don't think it's trying to be anything other than your typically shallow summer blockbuster Hollywood action movie.

    I appreciate that about it.

That looks brilliant. I love del Toro's work and I'm sure this will be an excellent dumb fun blockbuster. Of course it looks silly, but it's not the kind of film you should look for depth from.
