So, the Ouya Hooters-parking-lot-we-couldn't-get-into-E3-extravaganza was apparently a laughable disaster that a load of hipsters/neckbeards showed up to for free beer and t-shirts.

There's various Vine videos and twitpics of the hilarity floating around.

It looks like Ouya has some mileage as a cloud gaming device.

They tried to claim that the ESA attempted to stop them by - the horror - parking a truck in a nearby parking space, and then calling the police on them. But the story originated from Ouya and I never saw any confirmation that the ESA ever did these things.

They later tweeted a picture of some little kids wearing Ouya shirts with a sob story about the EVIL ESA not letting them into E3. This was deleted when it was pointed out E3 is an industry event with an age restriction of 17 or over.

I want to know more about Mad Catz' M.O.J.O. personally...

It sounds like a pretty capable little device, and that pad looks good too. I'd love to know how nicely it'd play with the emulated game bundles often thrown into the Humble Android Bundles like Raiden or Metal Slug, as frankly using emulated buttons on a phone just isn't right.

That will depend on the devs supporting a pad.

The Mad Catz device at least has Google Play, but few games offer pad support yet. That may change once Apple starts getting into this space - iOS7 has official support for gamepads.

It's going to be the same story: Apple will start encouraging devs to support controllers and it'll be an enormous success, further harming traditional portable games consoles and possibly impacting on the home consoles too. Then everyone else will shit themselves as they realise they should have done the same thing years ago.

Wouldn't be shocked if they patch bluetooth controller support into ICS up.

ICS has gamepad support already - the issue is that there's been no standard settled on up to now. Nvidia and Mad Catz are addressing this so we should see more games with controller support going forwards.

Yes this is true, by "support controllers" I did mean some kind of organisation so you don't get different layouts and hardware. Because the last thing Android needs is fragmented peripherals.

Google will do it when Apple does and it becomes massively popular.

Anyway. In Ouya news, someone from Ouya says that even though it was heavily marketed on being hackable and rootable, you don't need a recovery option to restore a bricked device, because it's your own fault. Even though they allowed you to root it.

My personal view (that's mine, not OUYAs) is that you don't NEED to be able to boot to recovery, you LIKE access to it. A number of people have managed to make their device unbootable with just root access by experimenting with things like compiling new kernels, then expect OUYA to fix them. Personally I think this is a bit unreasonable (if you started changing parts of the engine in a car and it broke down would you go back to the dealership?)

Is that actually someone from Ouya or just some random neckbeard from their forums? If the former, that's awesome. I always love the "I am a representative of this company but HERE IS MY OPINION, NOT THEIRS" disclaimers.

It was someone from Ouya. They deleted the posts shortly afterwards.

If you'd been sold the car as fully customisable, and then putting new parts in it caused it to burn down, then yes, yes you would.

My brother bought an Ouya yesterday. Has anybody had any issues with it recognising USB's sticks/SD card adapters/USB Hdd's?

The wireless was pretty poor, update failed 3 times before we finally wired it up. But none of our adapters would mount. A 64gb thumb drive NTFS, wouldn't work, an SD Card adapter with a 16gb FAT32 card in wouldn't work. A 1TB powered hdd wouldn't work, also tried my Microsoft 800 Keyboard and Mouse with the adapter, wouldn't work. My Measy Rc11 bluetooth remote (that works a treat on my MK809 Android on a stick) wouldn't work.

Could it possibly be a faulty USB port?

    @johnson81

I had some similar problems with the Ouya myself... it kept saying the wireless signal was too weak even though it was right next to the damn router. After I gave up and ethered it and after it had installed the update though, it works fine.

    Weird.

Looks like kickstarter backers have been sent a code for $13.37 credit. Woo! Check your emails.

Stop wasting your money on crappy games, is probably what I'd associate with the Ouya.

Stop wasting your money on crappy consoles is a better tag line.

    Hmm, bit odd that.

In other news, XBMC has gone official now.

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

It does show the kind of person who would buy an Ouya: someone who purchases a game at full price without reading reviews, then vomits and rips out their own spine in frustration. Two seconds on Metacritic could have spared that.
  • Deleted user 21 August 2013 14:22:46
Stop wasting money on crappy games, buy an Ouya where the ratio of crappy games to good games is wider than any other distribution outlet!

That was one of the ouya games wasn't it? Looked like Game Vom Spine Ripper to me. Only that was clearly pre-rendered cgi.

They're now claiming it was just a test video.

"We are experimenting with animated content and posted this video briefly to get feedback from our community. Stay tuned for our official video, the representative said.
So they (presumably) paid someone to make an advert, posted it on their official YT channel and then quickly pulled it after getting negative press, but it was just an "experiment"?

This is some unbelievable bullshit even by Ouya's standards.

More Ouya shenanigans. They've been trying to drum up dev support by promising to match successful KS projects that achieve over $50k in funding. Okay. Seems pointless, but alright.

    http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/28/4667078/ouya-kickstarter-scam-allegations

Both these games managed to hit their targets in very short order. Gridiron Thunder in particular looks like total garbage yet appears to have persuaded several people to stump up several grand each.

The Elementary game has hundreds and hundreds of blatantly fake backers, some with celebrity photos in their profiles. One profile pic is an image of a woman who has been missing since 2011.

It seemed like these people were just scamming Ouya for the money, but it might actually be Ouya doing it. Someone commented on the Gridiron page that they knew the company making it, and that they had originally made a deal to have their game directly funded by Ouya. Then that was pulled at the last minute when Ouya decided this KS campaign would be better PR.

    More nails in the coffin.

Will honestly be surprised at this stage if they come out with their "Ouya 2" in their supposedly yearly cycle of hardware. Stuff like Vita TV, Chromecast, HDMI smartphones et al are just destroying this nonsense.

I wouldn't mind seeing some stats on game sales, considering the number of people who own these things.

The competitors' hardware is superior, but they have no customer base in comparison to the number of Ouya consoles that are already out there.

I wonder how things have turned out so far...
