EG have quite clearly stated how we should interpret their review scores but everyone knows gamers are pig headed retards so what skewed interpretation do you apply to review scores?

    Here's mine:
    .
10/10 - this game will change your life, beg, borrow, steal or murder to get this game. Day 1.
9/10 - great game, buy it if you like the genre. Day 30.
8/10 - good game but possibly derivitive, buy when cheap. Day 60.
7/10 - don't bother unless it's part of a franchise you love. There are better more worthy examples much more deserving of your hard earned cash. Day month of Sundays.
6/10 - some joy can be had here but be prepared to wade through reams of guff to find the sweet stuff. Day when it shows up on steam for 75p.
5/10 - average and most probably overpriced. Only buy if you have a perverse interest in this franchise/genre or are a family member of the developer. Day freeby on PS Plus when your're bored of pulling hairs out of your balls.
4/10 - shit. Day of the dead.
3/10 - really shit. Day of the jackal.
2/10 - pathetic shit. Day of disaster.
1/10 - broken shit. Day of defeat.

Never take review scores at face value, always read the review.

I like Edge's system to be honest.
I've found it solid and reliable for over a decade.

I think maybe only once or twice in 14 years have I disagreed with any major point of an Edge review.

I couldn't give one solitary fart about any review on any game. If it looks like my sort of thing I'll buy it. If it is a game in a series I enjoy I'll buy it. If a couple of like minded people give the game a nod, I'll buy it. Reviews are completely meaningless to me and usually either involve said reviewer giving the game a free ride because it is part of an 'AAA' franchise or trying too hard to put their own 'stamp' on a review and appearing either pretentious or half witted depending on their particular level of intelligence.

10 - Moves genre forward. One of the greatest games ever made.

    9 - Very good game

    8 - Enjoyable

7 - Worth playing but nothing special

6 - ok but unlikely to play it through to the end.

5 - offers nothing I have not seen in a better game.

    0 to 4 - avoid

x/10 - read the review and read the comments.

@SolidSCB I find that a bit of a strange attitude. You might use reviews and make your own judgement, but to say they are meaningless seems wrong to me.

I never would have bought Bayonetta were it not for the reviews in Edge and on EG, and that's one of my favourite games of this generation.

    @SolidSCB

I completely agree, most games I buy are through recommendations and to be honest this thread is just a bit of fun.

    Dude: It's a 10/10 game!
    Bro: What's it about?
Dude: Who cares, it got 10/10 reviews all over the place, I'm gonna buy it!

I don't really pay any mind to scores myself. Most of the time I don't even pay any mind to the reviews.

Only time I will, and take in what the reviewer says, is if I know they have similar tastes to myself.
Even then, it's just someone's opinion and experience.

For example, I enjoyed FFXIII. Nobody else did.

    Opinions.

Pfft. Where are the mods to lock this outrage of a topic!! I posted a thread about review scores and if they should be used!! This is clearly a topic that has been covered in the past 3 years!!!

Oh no wait, this is a forum for people to post about general gaming. I got confused that it was something else.....

    5 and under ignore

6 rent if if kind of thing

7 get if really your thing

8 maybe buy even if wasn't on radar

9 or 10th get unless hate that type of game or it is call of duty.

    There are two types IMO:

Buy it if you like that sort of thing/rent if not
    Avoid

To the OP, I rarely read reviews these days. Forum buzz is more important.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

I only buy games that get an 8 on EG. Nothing more, nothing less.

Don't tell the staff but I normally go straight to the comments or forum.

Surely it would work out cheaper to purchase Manchester City.

I guess that depends on your definition of forum..! In general though yes it is, I wish people would stop going on about how much worse it is from their day though!

Using this forum has helped me find more games I like than every review I've read ever. Some games are reviewed like absolute shite wrongly, are played down because they don't belong to a megabucks franchise or the person reviewing the game just doesn't 'get it' usually because they have rushed through it and missed out on half the experience.

Fuck reviews, I'll take word of mouth on here any day of the week.

I also use the Forumite Recommendation System, much like SolidSCB. It has proved far more reliable, mainly because I generally know who tends to enjoy the stuff I do so can trust them :)

Takes more time to get a feel for it of course, and not as instant as a review, but also not as meaningless as a number at the end of some words.

More or less meaningless to me.

I rent 95% of my games I'd only pay attention to review scores if a game I planned on renting got universally bad scores, and even then I'd probably still at least try it out.

Word of mouth via friends or a forum such as this is more important to me.

This is actually the best and most succinct point about review scores, would work perfectly for me.

    10/10
