Well, northernish. Me and my family are going for 12 days come september. From Lisbon up to Porto.

Are there any nice places in between that I shouldn't miss?
    Anything near Porto or Lisbon?

I like beautiful scenery and good food. No need for tips on nightclubs since I'm way past that stage in my life. This is the kind of stuff I like.

What to eat? I have no idea about portuges cuisine.

Aveiro is very nice and on the food front, you have to try Bacalhau (codfish).

Also, off to the west of Lisbon is a little place called Sintra, which is overlooked by a kind of castle (Palace of Pena) made up of different forms of architecture.

Edit: Oh, and Coimbra is a very old city, well worth a look.

    If you like Football grounds

Braga's ground is a bit out of the ordinary.

@Fab4 Sintra is already a planned stop and exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for.
Is Bacalhau a special dish or the fish itself?

Its a dish, but its usually codfish and thinly sliced potatoes. Then the variations (and there are a lot) comes with the other ingredients/method of cooking.

First day back at the office after the trip.
Short verdict: Portugal is amazing and everyone should go.

We never made it to Averio but we did see Pena castle and The castle of the Moors in Sintra outside Lisbon.

Then off to Evora for a few hot days. Lovely little town with nice restaurants.

Then Obidos and a cool theme hotel. Lovely little town with amazing views. We had delicious grilled fish and swam in the pool.

After that a few days in Porto. We had some bad weather there so we missed out on a lot. I definitely want to go back there though as I loved what I saw.

So yeah, do go to Portugal and travel around a bit. Nice people, great food , lots to see and not too expensive. Don't do like us and go by public transport. It's a bit of a hassle and you miss out on some nice small places.

I was there when I was a kid, first holiday abroad and we were given fairly long leashes. Very fond memories of warm sun, great simple food and friendly people. Always wanted to go back and see it as an adult.
