Don't get me wrong, Wiggins et al will be on silly money bikes.

Club racers I indirectly know are on 3000-6000 bikes, and they never have just one bike either.

I think I'd need a ladder to get up that current climb :D

They are making it look so easy, I can't believe it. I know Brad was favourite, but..!

First stage I've seen since returning from holiday in France, strange hearing it in English :)

I remember the days when the only British interest was Chris B, which was great at the time, but he was never going to do anything past the first 3 days, and Max Sciandri (didn't realise he is directeur sportif of BMC!).

This year has been simply amazing.

Prob best not to read if you haven't seen stage yet.

Just seen the post stage interview with Wiggins. He reckons it's in the bag, which of course barring a crash or something it is. Surprised Froome wasn't allowed to push on for the stage win, good to see he's fully back on board with doing his job though.

Seems that Wiggins will win the whole thing but will he recover in time for the Olympics?

I don't think he's too fussed is he? Think he said he was going to repay Cavendish for his help in the Tour.

The Olympic road race is all about Cav, I don't think he was that fussed about the TdF.

There's over a week off before the Olympics, that's loads apparently.

Class! You don't often see a yellow jersey two days from Paris prepared to do leadout duty.

How much would one of those tour bikes cost? Can they even be bought, or are they custom jobs?
Different teams ride different brands and even different frames within the team but using Sky as an example: the Pinarello Dogma 2 frame would be 4000 off the shelf. Depending on the stage they would use different wheels (aero for flat days and lighter weight for climbs) but these would be a couple more grand. Tyres a couple of hundred pounds. Shimano Di2 groupset, about 2 and a half thousand. Saddle probably a couple of hundred pounds, stem and handle bars should be in the 500-1000 pound mark, some riders go for carbon bars for comfort, Cav uses heavier aluminium for stiffness in a sprint. Titanium and carbon dura ace pedals about 300 pounds, any screws made of titanium, a couple hundred more. Bar tape, cables, anything else, a couple hundred on top.

Bear in mind that most things are made up differently to off the shelf products, metal bearings are replaced with ceramic etc and even frame geometry is customised - Sagan has essentially a 58cm frot triangle and a 54cm dropout on his frame. This all drives the cost even higher.

Excuse my ignorance, what's with the oval shaped gears?

Q Rings, the idea is that your legs put out optimal power at certain degrees of the circle, like straight down, so the oval ring is equivalent to riding on a 56 tooth ring or whatever. When you're at the top of the circle, your legs put out less power so the smaller shape of the oval translates to a 48 tooth ring. If that makes any sense.

I'm sure I heard someone say John Terry was a great bike racer. Or was it a great big racist?

Loved the team director writing notes, shouting into the team radio on a microphone.....while driving behind his rider. And sitting next to a bloke who was doing nothing!

Got some fizzy wine in the fridge for tomorrow. This beats anything we'll do at the Olympics :)

First time the tour's been on mainstream telly (ITV1) for years. Hope not too many folk get put off by the current gentle procession part before the racing starts!

Cycling is getting huge in this country. It really is a golden era for British cycling, can't wait for the Olympic cycling too.

    Fantastic.

All we need now is a Road Race and TT double.

Great stuff, if the British team needed a bit of a boost before the Olympics they've just had a very big one.
