    @Triggerhappytel
    http://www.howtogeek.com/120482/how-to-root-the-nexus-7-galaxy-nexus-or-nexus-s/ a guide how to do it.
    once you have rooted get an app from google play called stickmount.
    you will need a file browsing app like astro file manager.
    then grab an otg cable from amazon (mine cost 1.50)
    This was my first ever attempt at rooting anything,so if anyone can give me an suggestions i would greatly appreciate that!!

    Case wise I've gone for one of these:

    Turned up today, it's a nice fit and reasonably cushioned.

    That looks cool, the LoveTab case we got is also really good. Reminds me of the Kindle cases

    Can anyone tell me if you can link up a controller like the dual shock and play emulators on the Nexus? Mame and Amiga emulation is what I am after....

    Also what is the performance like through emulation?

    Cheers.

    Yep, using a usb host cable you can connect PS3 controller or Xbox 360 wired controllers.

    Not sure about older dual shock pads though. I might give that a go later.

    One issure with using a wired xbox 360 pad is that the analogue parts don't work yet. so no triggers and thumbsticks map to digital only, so useless for n64oid :/

    You can link to ps3 pads wirelessly using an app called sixaxis controller, works great on my one x but not tried it on my nexus yet.

    I've had success on another Android tablet using this WiiController app and successfully played SNES/GBA emulators using it. I'd even go so far as to say it actually improved the game using the Nunchuck!

    YMMV.

    Great, thanks for the answers.

    I meant the PS3 pad btw, not dual shocks... can you use the pad wirelessly?

    Also, any news on using it with emulators and what the performance is like?

    I forgot about that little gem! As I use a Samsung phone I can't use it as Samsung is too cheap to buy the blasted Bluetooth IME! :(

    Cool1 I can play me N64 games again! :) The PS3 analogue sticks are too high res to use properly on N64oid

    Oh and Marvin (ZX Spectrum emulator), is utterly fabulous if you're of that era.

    Excellent recommendation, the integration with World of Spectrum is priceless.

    I'd also add Colleen (Atari XL emu, works quite well) and Frodo C-64 for the ultimate 8-bit experience.

    So, what's the bobby moore with sideloading on this? On my other Android devices I can sideload an apk file via Dropbox and install it no problem. Despite the fact the Google Play listing states the app isn't compatible or supported in my region. The good thing with this is (for me) is that it bypasses any auto-updates so the version I install is the version that stays loaded.

    Thoughts?

    The free app is iheartradio by the way, nothing dodgy ;)

    @mrpon just a case of popping to settings/security then checking Unknown Sources under device admin.

    I've loaded a load of games from indie bundles this way.

    Can you install these and run roms on a retail Nexus without rooting it? My interest is piqued. And good cradle like holders/cases that will set it vertically like a TV screen?

    @Dr-Strangelove

    Pretty sure none of them require rooting, from what I've seen the only thing you need to root for is OTG USB (or the low level hacks like cyanogenMod).

    If anyone in Ireland is interested I believe Currys/PC World are currently getting a bit of a stock refresh and are charging 249.99 in Blanch, Liffey Valley, Mahon Point, Carrickmines and I think it was Limerick.

    So close to the release of the surface now that I'm inclined to see the reception it gets but also have that all too familiar incessant "oh shiny" voice running through my head.

    Surface is in a completely different price bracket and target market though: the Nexus is just a really good content consumption device while the Surface is aiming for ipad 3 or potential netbook users.
