The advantage of Hangouts is that it isn't a part of the Android bundle so that google can stick this in the App store and let people download it and use it instead of what TC, Samfuckingrubbishsung et al dream up.
The real reason is so they can drop support for Messages. They're slowly moving all of Android's functionality into non open source apps: Gallery to Photos, Messages to Hangouts, Search to Google Search/Google Now. Same with Calendar, Camera, and the gradual moving of all the media stuff into Google Play. Even keyboard features.

About the only thing I can think of that is still open source is the Settings app, which is why it still looks like Froyo.

@Dougs hold the power button down for about 90 seconds, does a system reboot.

I'm probably just being twitchy because of what happened to ours, but operating on very low power did seem the commonest reason for bricking.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Not fond of the hangout thing.
I've struggled to send an sms because when clicking "new" and typing the name of my contact, who is saved as a contact on my phone , no match comes up.
    Bloody annoying.
I get another problem: three or four listings for the same person. There's one for their phone, one for their Hangout and one for their e-mail. They're all linked under one single name on my phone contacts, however, so I don't understand it.

Camera is Waaaay better since the last update though.
This, though. So, so, much better.

Loving my Nexus 7 v2. It's speedy as fuck, decent battery life given I keep all sync etc turned on and the screen is lovely.

2 questions/points though. If I want to HDMI out, do I need one of those Slimport jobbies or will any USB to HDMI cable do? Secondly, why the holy fuck didn't they include a rear flash? The camera is totally pointless now.

Rumours are the Nexus 10 2 will be shown at CES 14 next week. Timing would make sense.

Cool. Thinking a 12" tablet might be a little big for my tastes, but a 10" version of the Nexus 7? GTFI.

Dude, the Nexus 10 has been around for over a year. Admittedly, it's made by Samsung and not Asus.

Edit: Ignore me, I think you know this already. Your previous comment was a little conusing however.

Yeah - I was referring to the new editions of both tablets. My brother got the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 shortly after release, but even back then it just didn't tickle my fancy.

Tried the new Nexus 7 in New York in September, and that was a whole nother kettle of fish. A wee bit small, however.

Yes, you would. New Nexus 7 is going cheaper in some places, isn't it?

My Nexus 7 is broken. I went to use it last night and the entire right hand side of the screen doesn't respond to touch. I know it's physical damage as if I tilt it towards the light I can see the thinnest crack running the entire length of the thing... I just don't know how that's happened - I haven't dropped it or taken it anywhere for quite a while.

Either way, that's money I don't want to spend to replace it :(

Should still be under warranty? Or were you an early adopter?

I got it in November 2012, so probably long out of warranty.

Any new phones / tablets will be released to coincide with the new Android redesign later in the year.

@MrTomFTW I hate that about Android devices. I dropped my Nexus 4 for the umpteenth time but this time it got a tiny crack in the glass.

Three quarters of the screen rendered unusable. Yet I see people with iPhones swiping away with massive spiderweb cracks over the entire screen.

The cost of replacing the screen was ridiculous given how old the phone is.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

Isn't there a mandatory warranty within the EU of 2 years? You're good!

    Yes there is.

Although I'm not sure if a cracked screen will be replaced under that. That's not a faulty product.

Am I mad wanting to sell my note 3 and get a nexus 5?

Im in the same loop I was in last time when I dropped the note 2 for a nexus 4.

Really like the red nexus and touchwiz is annoying me again. I think whats making it worse is all the android 'L' screenshots showing up lately in all my android feeds.

    Nexus owners.

I sold my iPad mini last month and am regretting it so I'm looking at tablets.

The gen 1 nexus 7 is 100 at Argos. Am I missing anything not getting the gen 2?

Yes, the first one is slow now. Our 2 are pretty much unused now because they run so slow on the latest updates, loads of games don't work that we'll now too. Actually you've reminded me to root it and try a ROM, maybe cyanogenmod

Also, the screen and speakers are far, far better on the 2nd gen Nexus. It really is worth the extra cash Floyd.
