Chromecast sounds good if more services support it in the long run.

Better than buying a friggin Xbox for smartglass with Gold on top.

Chromecast sounds awesome and shite at the same time. Mainly because of this:

"Chromecast only works with Youtube, Netflix, and Google Play content"

I assume that means you can't download video from a different source and play it, which would mean a no deal for me. You can watch YouTube on pretty much anything nowadays including low budget non-smart TVs, so I wouldn't pay for the novelty.

I'm sure it will get hacked pretty quickly mind.

They are beta-testing streaming content from a browser though. Plus, couldn't you play downloaded stuff through an app from Google Play, like VLC etc?

Oh so you can play apps through it too? I assumed it was just video rentals and such from the play store. I admit I haven't read extensively about the device.

If I can play Plants vs Zombies on my HD telly then I'm buying it day 1 :).

I think you can mirror what's on your Android phone. Something like that anyway.

With a controller, or with a mouse, or...? The problem with shifting touchscreen phone/tablet games onto the TV is you can't see where your fingers are pressing on the screen.

I'm pretty sure it works with Google Play Music and Google Play Movies and a couple of other apps only so far.

There will be a workaround once it gets released. I've just read about 3 articles on the thing and they are all confusing and vague about what it does. That or I'm getting old and don't understand tech because I'm a spazz.

    It's the latter.

Mirroring your Android screen would be quite good...

Ah, having read another article, it only mirrors chromecast compatible apps - so yeah, YT, Netflix, Google Play. Not much kop for local content at the moment, but that may develop I guess.

You can fire up a google chrome tab on it, which is pretty neat. Gives your TV a decent web browser. It has a lot of potential but I doubt I will be rushing to buy one in the near future.

The mandatory USB charger thingy makes it look ugly but I guess it would be out of sight most of the time.

Thing is it sounded like all apps have the ability to build chromecast in, the sdk is available to anybody, innit?

    Chromecast sounds pointless. I can't think of someone intreased in a Google product that does not have any of the following ;

    DNLA handset
    Game console
    Smart TV
    HTPC
    Raspberry Pi
    XMBC
    Miracast device
    Media streaming box

And about a ton other niche products.

So yeah if you don't have any of the above chances are you will never hear of Chromecast.

I've only seen videos and read reviews, they seem very customisable, capable and XBMC runs very well on it.

    Bah ... I've done a mowgli. :-(
Although I bought a little pouch to offer a minimum of protection for my phone, since I hate the screen protector/bumper cases, I've been carrying the phone about for the last few days. The pouch was lying on the table at home.
Went to put it in my jeans pocket, missed the pocket somehow and it hit the floor. I picked it up and put it away. About an hour later, as i took it out, I did think "hmm. That was a bit of a fall, I hope it's OK. Forgot to check even."
The screen is cracked from the left bottom to the middle of the right hand side. Only the top bit still works.

I managed to get in via face unlock and by tilting it around a lot I could just about do anything I wanted to do. Should have though about changing the security settings though. I've now had maximum face unlock attempts. I restarted it and i can give in my pin but I can't press enter.

There's a shop not too far away that replaces the screens for 199 though. I'll be heading over there this lunchtime. :-/

It happens. Even to iPhones contrary to popular belief. I don't think I've got 1 friend who has an iPhone who hasn't cracked the screen on one of them (anecdotal evidence ftw). I suppose its a consequence of having a sheet of glass in your pocket 24/7.

Boooooooh. Takes them a week or two to order the screen for a Nexus.
I'm leaving on vacation on Friday.
Work has a spare Nokia E71 but that's a normal SIM and I have a micro sim. I guess I'll be passing by the local provider's store to swap sims over lunch time.

I wonder whether I'm better off bringing my phone with me to the UK in the hopes of finding a "fix while you wait" service somewhere.

Bugger. Looks like CPW's geeksquad do it loads cheaper but I don't think I'm over in the UK long enough to chance doing it there. Sadly my digital camera started acting up a few months ago, so with the phone out as well it looks like I won't be getting any snapshots from this vacation. :-(

The Moto X has finally got unveiled.

    http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/01/motorola-moto-x-preview/

I see colour customization gets you a mid range phone for a rather premium price on a contract. Ouch.

Guess Nexus is the way to go.

Anyone having trouble with MX player on 4.3 can use the "VLC for android beta". Works a charm.

I've just got my new Nexus 7 (from Amazon US using comGateway to forward to the UK) and very lovely it is too! Being slightly narrower and lighter shouldn't make a huge difference but it does feel much better to hold (madam) and the screen looks great.

    BAAANG!!!!! EXPLOTION!!!!!

How does the 7" fit into your hand? Do you get cramp after a while?

You'll have to ask my missus I'm afraid.

    ; )

My brother is off to New York for a midweek break this time next week and he is very tempted to buy one, seeing as he has a Nexus 4 too.
