Theres a whole catalouge of great games, across both 3ds and ds. So it be worth it space. Loads of great Third party games as well.

Just wonder how the ds games are going to look on the this. Might sway my decision to upgrade.

You had to wire a plug onto the bare end of cable yourself. TOTAL! Magazine ran a feature in issue 1 on how to do it properly and everything, with Andy Dyer unboxing his NES ending with a comedy "blown up" shot because he got the brown and blue mixed up.
I have that issue sitting on my shelf, great magazine, frankie took over as chief editor in issue 4 I think, and where is he now, making halo4 and speaking with an American accent.

I think it was Labour that introduced the Law in 99 that all appliances had to come with a fitted plug.

I assumed that was a joke based on the TOTAL Magazine article. Were early NES consoles really not supplies with a plug? I know for certain mine was, but it was the later NES Action Pack with lightgun.

No, I remember when a Homebase got built near us, and I remember when my folks started getting the Homebase 4-packs of plugs, rather than some no-name brand from Woolworths. And they all came with a free 13A fuse which meant most people didn't have the right fuse in any plug in the house other than the one for the lawnmower.

How does the system transfer work? Can you transfer your 3DS stuff to the computer or something, trade it in for an XL and then restore it from the back up or so?

Steve Jarrat was editor for the first couple of years(?) before leaving to launch Edge magazine.

I think the early NES came with a loose plug in the box, they left the cable prepped and chucked whatever plug the country it was shipped to required and you had to put it on. Unless my dad just really liked cutting plugs off of my birthday presents to wire them back on and impress mum with his mad skills.

Those corners just look more and more beautiful the more I see them... :p

Nice! Obviously that didn't show much of stretched Layton but what there was looked pretty decent. I'm pleasantly surprised.

I wonder what it feels like to hold.

It's weird, watching those vids makes me really want a 3DS XL even though I havent been too fussed about the 3DS in the past. Think it's a case of "shiny shiny".

What software is there worth having? IF I did get one next month I'd be looking at Super Mario 3D World, Zelda OoT and Pilotwings. Nothing else takes my fancy until maybe Luigi's 2 whenever that comes out?

I'm sure I'll end up getting one...I have an old japanese DSL I could sell and a 360 Elite kicking around too - could get them on Gumtree and put the money towards the XL.

I've borrowed a DSi XL to give it a try, before potentially getting this. It's fucking massive, and heavy for a handheld.

As nice as the bigger screens and other improvements will be, the reality is a rectangular block of that size will be a bit too big for me to hold comfortably, certainly for fast-paced and action games. The normal 3DS is actually perfectly sized for me.

Don't know why the console has to be so big, I'd have been happy with an L version that had just 50% bigger screens, or something.

It does look the perfect size for me, but I'll have to wait to get my hands on one. The existing 3DS is a little on the small side for me.

What does 'minor pixel density' mean in here: http://www.thefailgamers.de/2012/06/bigger-better-3ds-xl.html ?

I think that just means the lower PPI - basically, they're saying that didn't notice the picture quality to be worse as a result.

Not that keen on the different colour hinge with the unit closed, but I can live with that. I'm a bit dubious about these improved controls - could just be that with a new unit everything feels a bit more precise than an old used unit.

Also, with a matt unit I'll have to make sure I keep my thumbnails absolutely cut short. My DS Lite has little glossy patches to the top left of the dpad and top right of the A button, where by thumbnail has polished the surface smooth. I can't see a mark on my 3DS (once I clear all the smudges off).

Still very tempted by this though.

Me too, unfortunately. I've never seen the logic behind trading in old consoles for revised models, but that screen makes it very tempting.

Got a white 3ds with mario land for my birthday today, didn't realise before what a well made bit of kit it is. Don't see the appeal in the new one myself, looks as though they've cut costs to me (less metal, more plastic). The comparison shots on ign are worth a look.

Less finger marks on the XL.

Much improved, apparently. Yep, I can see myself getting this (I ended up rather liking the DSi XL, despite the big size).

Not the best review - the screen has three positions it will lock in now, I belive, and if you're getting ghosting it means you haven't found the sweet spot, numbnuts - but otherwise looking promising.

That's harsh, I found the ghosting quite prominent on certain games (like OoT) even when I'd found the sweet spot (as in, the 3D effect was otherwise excellent). Unless there's an even sweeter spot that completely eliminates ghosting, and is even narrower!

That's odd. If I ever see ghosting it's only because I'm only half in the sweet spot. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Same here. The only instances of ghosting I've had were in cutscenes, where they can sometimes feel the need to push the 3D too far. Just because it's not gameplay doesn't mean you can pop stuff right out!

I do hope the XL is just as good. I'd think it'd be at least as good or they'd not have bothered, surely?

Going to get one just for the large screen, won't be trading in my old one though for two reasons

    1) There appears to be some dead pixels (a line caused by closing the lid I believe as others have reported this) so game or whoever might be funny about taking it.
    2) I bought it on launch day so paid full price, not wanting to trade it in for no doubt a tiny amount, would rather let my kids have it.

I got to play on an XL in my local GameStation today! I have to say, the images on the internet just don't do it justice. Even in your hands its quite surprising how big it actually is. The screens are huge! I did have one tiny bit of disappointment with it though.

With the larger screen, I thought the depth of the 3D effect would increase too, but it doesn't. At least not on Super Mario 3D Land, which was the only game I could play. Things don't sink into the screen any further than with the old 3DS and it kinda makes the 3D effect seem a little more shallow as a result.

It's hard to explain, but when viewed on a normal 3DS, SM3DL feels like a game contained within a box. A box that is almost as deep as the height of the screen, if that makes any sense. On the 3DSXL, because the screens are bigger, the box feels more shallow and so the 3D impact isn't as great. At least not to me and I never play my 3DS with the slider set to anything other than full.

On the plus side though, it's harder to lose the 3D effect from moving the console around, which I know is still a problem for some people. That and although not as smooth as the 3DS, the games don't look all that pix elated.

Having played on one now my thoughts haven't really changed. If I didn't own a 3DS i'd buy an XL, but because I own a 3DS I think i'll stick with it.

Question: does anyone know that if I were to get one of these, would I be able to transfer my game history over? The OCD side of me doesn't want to lose my records :)
