    I've always taken a bit of an interest in this but not really done much reading on it. Anyway, I've been playing Assassin's Creed 2 recently and it's made me want to do some reading on it. I think it's fascinating (and yes, I know there's no millenia-old battle between assassins and Templars).

    Anyone read any books on the topic? this both seem to fit the bill, but I'm wondering if anyone's read either of them or can recommend something else.

    Ashamed to say I've never read up about the Renaissance (or rather Rinascimento) though I have studied it in the past so can't really help...

    Though one of the characters of ACII (Machiavelli) was of course a writer and has some interesting works though often misinterpreted (again, I wouldn't know unfortunately but the Prince especially is actually a parody but some don't see it that way)...

    @AcidSnake

    If you're worried about spoilering the name, maybe spoiler the book too?

    Ha! I've got that far into it anyway, it doesn't really bother me. Not that much of a spoiler, either.

    AcidSnake: I was reading about that just the other day, I didn't realise it was a parody. I always assumed he was a bit of a psycho. Feel a bit guilty now. :(

    @grey_matters:
    Didn't think it was that well known :)
    Spoilered anyway...

    It's not sure if it's a parody or not but that view seems to become more the consensus these days...

    Chap called Michael Baxendall (sp) wrote something on painting and society, perhaps a little specialist and certainly a touch early but a really good place to start.
