Microsoft Store are great, sending me offers for Office in dollars. Amateur hour.

My sister has been using the Surface for a while now and the niggles do shine through compared to a normal laptop. Something simple like accessing a work site that requires adobe reader and java. They can burn in hell but she can't do anything on Surface so needs a proper laptop which she still has so not the end of the world. Printers being gimped and not working at all which was expected. Xbox Music being possibly the worst app in the world. Just the general lack of freedom and choice is more important than first thought for basic use.

She is losing patience with it and will replace it with a proper laptop. Knew going in that Surface RT was restricted but thought it would suffice for most things but slight niggles just bring up a brick wall which is too frustrating to live with.

    Pro is looking good

Little bit concerned about the battery life though (and price obviously).

Looks like a nice bit of kit. Wish they'd gone with 16:10 though.

Agreed - for the price they are asking you could buy 3 iPad minis, which would be one for each app on the Windows 8 app store

You've got those prices the wrong way round.

Nice ad but it's very very dangerous territory. I don't think it would be particularly difficult for Apple to do a fairly crushing response ad.

They showed a couple features and that's supposed to convince me that the pro's better?

Still better than random people dancing around looking like weirdos.

Guys, that's not a Surface Pro in that ad, it's an Asus tablet.

Also the features they're touting are also available on Samsung Android tablets.

I wouldnt touch the surface until it has one of the new more power efficient CPUs in it.

Oh and they need to slim it down loads.

Anyone else thinking of getting a Surface RT now they're on the cheap?

Was thinking of getting the wife an iPad Mini for her birthday, but, while having it's little niggles, for what she will use it for the Surface looks to be thebetter option at only 10 more.

Was looking at it but it's still a gimped tablet for a shit ton of money. Maybe if it was the Pro.

Surely the RT is in it's death throes with Haswell resolving the main issue with "proper" cpu's? I suppose if the 2nd gen are Nexus 7 levels of cheapness it may stand a chance, but much more and it'd be silly to buy a gimped tablet when a Pro is a billion x more functional.

Now if the current RT could be had for Touchpad barg-of-the-year price, it'd be a great purchase for basic browsing/video...

I may reevaluate later on. Hoping they'll release a 7" Mini competitor.

Between the iPad mini and Surface, I would choose to pay a little bit more for an iPad or a Nexus 10.

The number of apps on the App and Google Play store is ridiculously brilliant compared to the genuinely poor selection of apps on the Windows RT store. Yes, it is a better for those who wish to use Office, which is superb in its own right and whilst the resolution is low-ish, the colours really pop out of the screen.

... if you do not care much about the apps side of things, a Surface at 279 is a good purchase.

p.s. I use a Windows Phone 8 phone and even I think the app selection is poor!

Very tempted, but the cost of the touch cover bumps the price up again. Only recently they were giving away free touch covers on the Microsoft site which has since stopped, if they chucked one in to I'd bite.

Happy with my Surface RT for the most part. Like the OS, and the snap-on touch cover concept.

    Things that could be better:

    1. More apps
    2. Can be a bit underpowered

Other than that, it's a consumer friendly touch tablet that I can also quickly setup on a table and type emails or edit spreadsheets with.

They actually had one in John Lewis so I had a little play around while waiting for The Ashes to restart. The lack of feedback from the keyboard felt really odd.

@IMO The touch cover, you mean? You get used to it surpisingly quickly. I type on mine a bit slower than I do on a full keyboard, but much faster (and more accurately) than an on-screen keyboard.

Since you asked, there are at least twenty-eight apps on the very opening page on the App Store at present that you cannot officially (I do not count third party copies) get on a Windows Phone 8 so, I assume the same applies to Windows RT too?

I like Windows 8 and the phone side of things too, but I'd be quite lost without my iPad because of the marvellous selection of apps on offer.

They need Windows RT to sell cheaper or smaller devices with better battery life and most important keeps Intel in check with prices and performance. ARM is very important. They won't and can't drop it.

Problem Microsoft has, Windows RT is hard to distinguish from Windows 8 and it is a transition OS. Microsoft are on the fence and haven't figured out how to sell it. No desktop would be worth considering, a file explorer and other bits to cover that removal.

The issue of Windows everywhere is that people come to expect everything Windows does when it looks the same. I don't expect my Windows Phone to have desktop features because it doesn't have one. Windows RT on Surface does, that is awkward even though I know it can't do most things. A mash of two designs doesn't work.

Even with 8.1, the issues will still be there. New Surface hardware should be nice though. First gen is a nice design and brilliant build quality. The charge/data transfer connection I just don't like.

Yeah, little strange. Never used it long enough to tell if I could live with it.

You can get a type cover which is only 6mm thick compared to 3.5mm of the touch cover. Had a go of the type cover in John Lewis and seems superb, still thin as well.

If MS made the touch/type covers more affordable they would be a good incentive over an iPad etc. if they brushed up the OS and got more apps.

Just had another wee play with one and it isn't as bad as I remember. App selection is utterly dredful but evernote is there so would be able to get some work done on it at least. (Even if the reviews for evernote say it is broken on RT).
