I could see myself getting the missus the 32gb + keyboard thingy to use for emails etc. I still want to see how the pro turns out.

500 feels a bit much, think I may have jumped if it was closer to 400 with a keyboard.

Tempting, especially how the memory is expandable. That said seeing as other manufacturers are releasing there full fat/Surface Pro equivalents next week, I'm going to hold fire until we get some hands on reviews and price comparisons. As fancy as Surface and it's touch cover look, I'd regret picking up the Surface RT if I can get a alternative which offers a full windows 8 experience for similar money to the 64gb model.

Also the fact it is unproven. Nobody has really had a good hands on with one.

Apple announce event for October 23rd. Here comes the iPad Mini.

There are indeed alternatives being released the same day offering full windows 8, Acer are releasing a tablet with 64gb memory using lower end Intel processors for the same price as the Surface RT

I'm well and truly sat on the fence for now...

Suppose I can add it to the mortgage :)

I want to see how much the pro is first.

    Come and get it cumslingers!

@Psychotext I haven't tried one of these obviously but imo laptops are much better than for emails and and stuff if you have them on your lap. I have a feeling these might tip over. Probably only good for having on a table.

    Prices look good.

I think these are going to be a catastrophic failure. If you could run existing windows programs on them they'd be great, but they won't.

They should concentrate on the Win7 style interface for desktops and laptops and WP8 style OS for tablets and phones, trying to mash it together into something that's frankly not very nice to use with a touch screen is suicidal.

@Dirtbox If you could run existing Windows programs on them it would be Windows 7 on tablets all over again and that was terrible.
I agree somewhat on the fact that they shouldn't have the desktop on tablets and the new interface on the desktop but that was probably the only way to make sure developers would develop Metro apps. If there's a Windows 8 PC in every house, all developers will want a piece of that pie. My guess is the desktop UI will be completely gone in Windows 9, whenever that is.

I've been using Win7 on a tablet every day since last May, and not once has it been terrible. Granted, it's not designed for touch, but it's perfectly usable on a good device. I tried it out on a cheapo netbook with a resistive screen before I bought my current machine, and that was utterly abysmal, but then most things will be on a resistive screen.

I've been using windows 7 and 8 a lot longer with a touch screen and it simply doesn't work.

Well, I probably should have pointed out that my PC has an active digitizer and pen, so I can use that for various things that you can't do on a touchscreen (such as mouse hover), but for 90% of my day-to-day PC use, I'm just using the screen.

That may be a larger caveat for others, but then I also have USB ports, so at least it's versatile.

There already is a WP8-style tablet OS - Windows RT!

I think MS are smart to leverage the inevitable ubiquity of Windows 8 to introduce Modern UI to masses.

Personally, I'm done with the Intel/desktop experience at home. My decent-spec laptop runs too damn hot, is too damn loud, runs increasingly slow, and isn't portable enough.

Surface with Windows RT is the simplified, versatile hybrid tablet I've been waiting for, and it will sync nicely with my Xbox 360 and Windows 8 phone as well.

My only gripe is the lack of 3/4G and maybe standalone 64GB model option if you prefer the type over the touch cover, otherwise, looks good.

    According to TheRegister:

That gives you the base specification pricing, but Microsoft has some accessories that will bump up the total price. If you want a cover that isn't black "so customers can express their personal style," as Microsoft puts it that'll set you back $119.99. A Type Cover (the keyboard cover with more key travel for easier typing), will run you $129.99. If you want an HD Digital AV or VGA Adapter, they'll cost you an extra $40 apiece, along with another $40 for a separate power adapter.
I'd hoped the AV Adapters would be included. Anyone know what do you get with the base kit? Surface, Cover, Power Adapter or is there a USB cable for that instead?

I'm waiting for Pro spec anyway, my phone is Tegra 3 so i'd want something with a little more grunt if i'm buying a tablet.

Yeah, so does mine. I use touch on it about 2% of the day unless I'm using some app that needs the stylus.

@jellyhead have you seen what's inside an iPad box? Why should this tablet be any different?

No idea how it compares but the surface rt has a quad core tegra.

They don't have many colour options in the UK. So much for the advert.

So, hang on - you buy a Surface, but inside the box is an iPad?
If so, I'm sold on one of these babies* ;p

*at least then it would have some kind of track-record as a successful tablet and touchscreen OS, I guess (oh yeah, iwentthereandlaidthebait)

Or the new Nexus 7 32GB that's about to launch too... 199
They're also rumoured to be dropping the 8GB model (barely useful) to 100. That's a 4 core CPU/ 12 core GPU touchpad for less than a ton.

I can't see why ANYONE needs to spend more than 200 for a tablet these days.

559 for a tablet is just a joke IMO. Especially given what's actually powering the ipad and Surface.

Why do people complain about the price when it's essentially cheaper than an iPad? Sure there are 199 tablets but these are 7". Maybe Samsung, Acer or whoever will come up with a 7" Windows RT tablet but as it is I find the Surface fairly priced.

Yep, a 7" version would be great, but the high licensing cost for Win8 would make it unlikely to happen. There wouldn't be enough profit in it if they wanted to price it competitively. Of course, if the iPad mini proves to be a huge success (which it no doubt will) then I suppose there is a small chance that we might see some.

You know who doesn't have to pay licensing fees? Microsoft! :D
Surface mini in 2013 is an easy bet.
