It's a little odd that you have to download these from within the game. Even if you go to the eShop it'll boot up the game when you click on a level pack. Free levels though! Cant really complain about that!

I have played this game non stop for the last week. It's really excellent. I think if you have played through all of Mario's recent output you might be a little battle worn, but given that I have not played a 2D Mario since the DS one, this is fantastic.

It's definitely a fun game, and the whole coin obsession was a good idea that really helps some bits of it feel fresh. Sure, only little bits here and there really benefit, but the rest is still as solid as ever.

Don't think I'll ever hit the million coins or however many it is though, I'm not going to grind coins until it stops being fun. Though I am about halfway I think so if Coin Rush gets your attention you probably won't need much grinding anyway :)

It's a good game, but I think the Wii U version is a much better game overall. The level design in this one sure feels different to the rest of the series, but for some reason I didn't enjoy this one as much. It probably has more to do with the fact that I like to pace myself and collect everything in Mario games.

I have all the DLC too. There's some great levels in there. I really wish you could get street passes online though. Nobody round here seems to have a 3DS so I never get street passes. I am getting near 400,000 coins. I think I will go for the million.

I have the opposite problem. I can't play all the streetpasses I get, because I get over 15 every day.

That downloadable level pack with the classic Mario levels that all lead into each other like some sort of twisted rabbit hole is probably some of the most fun I have ever had with a platformer. It is too bad people who don't buy it, won't experience it.

Also, the ghost houses in this one are especially insane. I don't remember them being this crazy in other Mario games. Tricky and unpredictable. But they are downright maniacal here.

I took my 3ds to town and got one stinking street pass hit. Not a nsmb2 one either :(

There's a world map, and you just pop onto whatever you like so you can go back and play any levels to get Star Coins you missed. Star Coins are special ones in set positions in the levels that are designed to be challenging and require a little exploration.

If you are the sort to aim for 1 million, it'll mostly be from Coin Rush - those levels spit out more coins, and hitting the top of the flagpole doubles your score so by the time you do the 3 levels you'll be talking thousands!

On your second point, the whole 103 gets added to your total. You get the 1-up in addition to that.

What's the difficulty like on this? Does it pick up at all?

Once I'm finished with Donkey Kong I might grab this.

It's fairly easy I'd say. Standard world have about the same difficulty curve as any New Super Mario game, with the usual secret levels being a bit more challenging.

The Coin Rush levels are the biggest challenge though, and if you enjoy those there are DLC ones that are amongst the hardest Mario levels I've ever played! One mistake and you're dead.

@DUFFKING it's nothing like DK difficulty wise!

Some of the DLC levels are worse though!

Nintendo haven't been all that bad really with the Mario platformers on 3DS, so far they've been true to their word with 1 NSMB per console. Not that it'll stop them doing more in the future of course. There are lots of old ones on the Virtual Console, but that's about it.

Super Mario Bros 1, 2 3 and Lost Levels are available for the Virtual Console, if that takes your fancy.
