Yeah, gow3 was solid proof that designers shouldn't listen to the Internet.

Even Gears 2 was too far. Gears 3 was the most expensive work of Boredom Art I think I've ever played.

Gears 1 was a flawed work of genius, especially in multiplayer. Neither of the sequels built on it in any way that didn't bore the tits off me. A prequel does as much for me as a dose of the screaming ab-dabs I'd have to say.

I still think the campaign in Gears 2 is the best of the bunch, but obviously due to the many(hundreds?)of Hours I have put into 3, it has a place in my gaming heart. The online various modes are excellent, especially if you play with the same great crowd.

Gears 1 had focus, and tight arenas. Gears 2 lost that. I never even played Gears 3 online because the single player put me to sleep pretty effectively. Biggest waste of potential ever, I think. No real growth - just the famous "bigger, better and more badass" or whatever it was. It lost the magic along the way for me.

Maybe they can reboot it and get that tight focus back. Fingers crossed!

That's all the optimism I can muster. Sorry! :)

yeah i wasn't overly taken by 3's campaign but i'm optimistic with this one considering who's making it.

    From the front page:

...As for the campaign, Judgement begins 15 years before Gears of War. Baird and his Kilo squad stand trial for transgression against the Coalition of Governments. Testimonies are heard by COG leader Colonel Loomis, who accuses Kilo of desertion, cowardice, trespassing, theft of military tech and treason. The setting is Halvo Bay, the home of the Onyx Guard Academy and inspired by San Francisco.

On the COG side the classes are the engineer, soldier, medic and scout. Damon Baird is an engineer, and carries a Gnasher and Blowtorch. His special abilities include deploying a a sentry turret and repairing damaged fortifications. Augustus Cole is the soldier, and carries a Lancer and Boomshot. He can deploy ammo crates and can resupply the engineer's Blowtorch ammo. Sophia Hendricks is the medic, and carries a Lancer, Snub pistol and Stim Gas grenades. She can use grenades to revive downed enemies. And finally Garron Paduk is the scout. He uses the Longshot and the Snub as well as a beacon grenade.

On the Locust side the classes are the Wretch, which can leap over hazards, the Ticker, which can eat fortifications and grenades, the Kantus, which can heal friendly units, the Grenadier, which, you guessed it, specialises in grenades, the Bloodmount, which specialises in melee, the Mauler, which carries a shield, the Serapede, which provides ranges support and the Corpser, which can move underground.

    :D

    Not the fucking corpser!

Good stuff. Like the fact that different characters have different abilities. Feel that has been missing in GOW3.

@richarddavies Yeah I really like that PCF are making this also. It might end up being a bit unadventurous, but it should at least be _fun_ from moment to moment.

Yep I am a big fan of games like TF2 where you need to have a balance of different classes, but who's going want to be baird when there are corpsers about!

"It has too many set pieces, its too epic, the worm was stupid"

And so they toned it down to an amazingly pedestrian walk in the park. I liked one, loved two (apart from the many insta-death bits) and was bored to tears with three. There is just nothing to grab you, nothing new and interesting and no big, dumb set pieces to keep you entertained.

That and the fact that they chose the third game to 'do an arbiter'.

And, wrt finishing trilogies, the ending was worse than ME3.

Sorry, so you want a worse campaign?

Gears 2 was full of gimmicky overlong setpieces and boring level design. The raft was good, and the worm, but the rest was forgettable. Gears 3's campaign was miles better.

i suppose its all down to preference really but it really lacked something for me 3's campaign. I was wishing it would finish long before it did. It might of just been a case of "seen i all before" syndrome.

Not too fussed about multiplayer, but any more single player is fine with me, as long as they maintain the quality of the first three games.

i just thought if there's classes i.m guessing you won't be able to pick up weapons that spawn on the map? The class system would seem kinda pointless if you could just grab a different weapon set during the match.

I wasn't overly impressed on my first playthrough of the third game but I enjoyed my second playthrough on insanity a lot more.

It was quite understated in places but it was an enjoyable campaign.

    FLOPS! RAM!
