    Hello.

Firstly, may I apologise for my username, but it genuinely was suggested to me by Eurogamer (see profile pic).

I wondered if anyone would be so kind as to suggest a laptop to me. I'm sure you get these requests all the time, but i thought it might be worth a try.

Basically, I'd like to run anything out there at full whack. I've read that the 7970M is the way to go, but have been told that I need 2 of them. If I *do* need 2 of them, do I need to then worry about CPU bottlenecking?

Basically, If I could run BF3/Crysis at Ultra at native res, at 60fps, then I'd be happy. Is this possible, and if so, can it be done relatively* cheaply?

*when I say relatively, I mean, do I really need the best of everything!?

Budget would ideally be around 1000.

    Thanks

You need a powerful desktop for bf3 ultra 60fps, so for a laptop it won't happen. Also the powerful laptops are known as 'desktop replacements' because their bloody heavy and very hot. So ask yourself do you really need one? Get a middle desktop (gaming) and cheap laptop (portability) maybe.

    Thanks for the replies.

Blimey, so even dual 7970ms and a i7 3920XM won't manage it? Out of my price range I'm sure, but just wondered if it was technically possible.

Has to be a laptop as it's going through work. Have a budget of 1000 but could put some towards it. Won't be using it on the go ironically, it's more of a space saving issue and having the option to move around if necessary.

If I upped the budget to 2000, what would people recommend?

    Thanks again.

in my experience you would be better spending 1k on a laptop now and get a new one for 1k in a couple of years time. even if you spend 2k now whatever you buy wont cut the mustard after two years

I suggest gettin an ivy bridge laptop with one of the newer radeon or geforce gfx cards but that still won't do bf3 at ultra I'm afraid.

oh and don't get a 1080p laptop as that needs more gfx ooomph to drive it obviously.

My Alienware M14X is the perfect laptop (IMO) for the balance between portability and power. The new R2 is out now and I can easily recomend getting one of them.

My laptop plays BF3 on medium settings around 40FPS.

I would say if this is for all your gaming (mine is only for when on the move) I'd invest in a desktop instead

Thanks all. Picked one up today.

    Core i7-3610QM quad-core Ivy Bridge
    Nvidia GT 650M
    6GB ram

    750

    Seems pretty good so far.

Was looking at the Asus G74SX, but it was nearly twice the price. However, I just ran 3D mark and the results were pretty impressive.

    Asus G74SX -
    3DM11 - 2008. 3DM Vantage - 9180

    Mine
    3DM11 - 2412. 3DM Vantage - 9206

    Nice.

Well, I have to say, for 750 I'm gobsmacked.

Doesn't seem to be an awful lot of difference between Ultra and High in BF3 - If any!? Anyway, I'm playing at native res (1600x900) with everything on High except Textures which are on Ultra and it doesn't drop below 30fps often enough for it to be noticeable. And for some reason, 30fps seems far smoother on a 17" screen than a desktop size screen.

MW3 is playing as smooth as a cashmere codpiece with everything maxed out - again, at native res.

Can't believe how much laptops have come on in the last 3 or 4 years. To be able to play games like this without the need for all the desktop shenanigans is amazing.

Biggest bonus for me, is as there isn't really any changes or upgrading that can be done, I can just get on and play some games rather than dicking around constantly upgrading tweaking overclocking and benchmarking.

Linky to where you got this laptop from? I'm in the market for a new one too and that looks a bargain.

    PC World. \o/

They're right too - the speakers are brilliant considering they're laptop speakers. A real good punch to them.

Anyway, it's on there for 899, but if you upload a jpeg of your receipt to the Samsung site, you get cash back for the VAT within 30 days. Bargain.

Why did you go for an i7? Should have saved yourself a couple of hundred quid and got a faster i5.

Doubt I could get any other 17" laptop regardless of whether it was i5 or i7 with a 650m for 550.

And from my experience I doubt it would make that much difference to be honest, give or take a frame or 2 - plus that was just about the only laptop on the High Street with a 650m in it at a decent price.

Oh, and not forgetting the 6 months interest free credit that PCW offer!

    Loving this at the moment.

At 1024x768, Crysis 2 runs like a charm... With DX11 enabled, along with the high res textures patch, with everything on Ultra. Awesome.

It's not full screen and native, but in blacked out windowed mode it still looks pin sharp and lovely. Just means I have a black band left and right and thin ones top and bottom. Still effectively a 12" playing screen though, which is fine when I'm sitting as close as I am.

Nothing but praise at the mo, considering it's a standard Samsung PC World job.

one day, they will make a small and thin laptop with a high spec graphics card and long battery life, instead of these beasts that burn your lap, weigh a tonne and last about 2hours before dying.

    i'd love one of those

that's not going to happen for a long time, there's a few techs on the horizon that will help a lot but there's nothing actually out there at the moment that will help for the foreseeable future.
