Was thinking of finally giving it a go, but had a dream about it last night and was playing with my mates but they wouldn't let me get a gun and every time we found one in a house they stole it and laughed at me. They also made me check rooms first because I had a torch and compass that I brought in from real life, and it was extra cruel because if I died then I'd lose them in real life too. In the end we got chased for miles, running round towns and stuff to try and break line of sight from this gang of bastards, but they caught us and butchered us all. I woke up and couldn't find my compass, which means I have to go camping tomorrow without my compass which is not something I'm looking forward too. Curse you Day Z.

Is it normal in terms of the Arma2 engine to be getting decent FPS in the countryside (50-60fps) only to have it crashing down in built up areas. Even if there's buildings in the near distance, just looking at them gives me about a 15fps drop and any trek through a built up area sees me sub 30. Don't really want to start dropping my settings to lower than normal.

    Currently playing on a mix of normal/high settings with a 6870, i3 2100 and 4gig ram.
It's normal, the big towns always hammer your framerate.

The thing with Arma is that the weird (apparently intentional) mouse lag means the game feels really sluggish even if your framerate never drops below 40... I don't think there's any solution really.

Also the graphics options often feel like they make fuck all difference to your performance, with the possible exception of the shadow detail. You may as well try whacking everything up full - see if it makes any difference.

I think the game is pretty CPU and RAM intensive as well, I dunno how well the i3's handle other games but that's probably your bottleneck in Arma.

Cheers WS, I had heard the Arma2 engine doesn't have the best rep for being well optimised. The mouse lag and slight sluggish feeling I can live with and I'll just have to get used to 25fps in towns.

The i3 is pretty capable - sure an i5 or 7 would give me better performance but the little pecker has done wonders in every other game I've got - benchmarks similar to first gen i5's and top end quad core phenoms.

There are some funny problems with individual servers affecting frame rates too. I was on a couple and the whole thing became a slideshow.

I'm not running a FPS counter, but I seem to get decent enough performance, and my kit is more modest than yours; stock Q6600 CPU, 1Gig 6850

Are you sure you haven't actually bought the game already? That sounds like a fairly standard session of DayZ ;-)

Here is a fix for mouse lag.
Mouse smoothing in game options > controls > right side
    slider to the left.

Then in the .cfg file which is in C: My Documents, arma2oa.cfg, change this line
    GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1000;
or any other value if you altered it already

    to value
    GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1;

    Works quite nicely :)

Worse still is whilst driving along (I live in a reasonably rural part of the country) I drive past open fields and small forests and I have before now seen a barn and thought, 'Hmm, I wonder if there's any good loot inside there.'

Yeah same here, there's a lot of those old barn and shed type buildings, I sometimes wonder if there's 4 hatchets and some beans in there

There's probably only 3 empty tin cans, 1 empty whisky bottle and a heatpack.

Anyone else find it weird that there's blood packs lying around with rubbish in random sheds around the countryside? They're not even kept refrigerated, it would kill you to have a transfusion from them!

Don't think blood packs spawn in sheds or rubbish. Only in hospitals.

Chances are someone dumped that there when they found something they didn't have room for less than a few minutes ago (stuff despawns quick when dropped these days).

But yeah, even in cardboard boxes on the roof of a hospital (?) I'm not sure I would want a transfusion from that... and I may not even be the right blood group!

Someone probably dropped them while picking up something more important. I know I've done that a few times.

These days I carry too many blood packs, just in case. Whenever I need space for something else, I generally end up leaving a bloodpack behind these days. Still have 4 or so at the mo, just in case someone needs rescuing!

@psychokitten Still got that FN FAL with no ammo?

Found 3 clips by a helicopter (thanks to jag for the heads up).

    Got them in my backpack.

Jag got a map and a crash course in navigation for his troubles.

I got NV goggles. Sounds fair.

Nice one! Good timing, I was going to dump (ish) it soon. Froobs found a tent kit so once he sets that up somewhere I was going to throw it in there to make space. Still have it for now :)

The Whitelist Medics Service over at the DayZ forums is a great idea. Just tell 'em where you are and they will try and get to you.

@psychokitten I'm up by Prud atm along with Jag and MikeP so if you're around at some point, shout and you can once more be armed and dangerous.

I've not moved from Prud yet, was busy watching 'lympics last night. I was going to take a look down at Stary Sobor and the military camp, as I've not been there yet.

I suspect this is a staggeringly bad idea, as no doubt it's a sniper honeypot. Maybe one for a lovely moonlit low pop server.

@MikeP Jag and I went down there last night after checking the supermarket for a new backpack (none). Didn't find much in the camp and tents but a little more SD ammo.

A very dark server would work well now I've got NVGs.

you were totally unconfrontational in your bandit skin the last time I was on a server with you.

The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

The Server you're on can make a big difference I've found. Some some reaso, SP2 runs at 50% higher frame rates than any of the others. Some are terrible.

Talking of frame rates I joined a server that's normally fine yesterday and the fps had dropped to below 10, it was night though and I've heard that can make a difference for some reason.

I still have it. I believe I'm north of either Berezino or potentially moved down south a bit. Can't quite remember, been a bit too busy to play recently.

Still have that alice pack full which only has food and drink in it, so if folks are getting hungry or thirsty then I can come help out.
