Never played a MMO in my life, but this looks a bit nifty. Any idea if it will be qualitatively different from WOW and its ilk or just more of the same?
It looks like it's basing a lot of the mechanics on Guild Wars 2, which is a good thing. The real question is if it's going to feel anything like an Elder Scrolls game though.

That vid is a bit over enthusiastic, interesting though.

I'm keeping very low expectations of this just to be safe.

Yeah, he's gone all a bit giggly as he's in the Secret Alpha Club, but it gives me some hope. I'll try not to get too enthusiastic.

It reminds me of some of the good aspects of Warhammer Online. Although in retrospect that was a pretty flawed game, I enjoyed the public group questing and some of the open PvP a lot.

Signed up for the beta. Never played a MMORPG before so my chances of getting in are probably slim, though.

I know it's unreasonable, but I basically want Oblivion with other people running about, clunky combat and all. Don't get me wrong, it wouldn't sell because it wouldn't be good, plus without further research I'd be willing to bet someone has already made a multiplayer mod for PC.

I'd still give it a go though, I just hope it feels like Elder Scrolls.

    Doesn't look good tbh.

    It's MMO flop time!
  • Deleted user 15 April 2013 10:51:23
I'm not sure what comes next for MMOs, but this isn't it.

There is such huge and exciting potential for MMORPGs now that we have faster internet connections and more powerful computers, but to realise that potential someone needs to seriously rethink the game mechanics of these things. Any pitch that starts off "It's WoW but..." needs to be ditched.

Erm, is it me, or does that video look like some 90's digitized shite, ala 7th guest?

I've not had a chance to watch it yet, just looking at the image on the above link so can't tell

Nearly a year later and I was wrong, they look really, really shit.

I can see this cratering worse than SWTOR.

Yeah this is over before it starts. The Theme Park MMO is dead.

MMOs need to move to sandboxes.

"from the team that brought you Darkfall"

I would boot this up to be disinterested within 10 minutes.

Had a chance to look at the video now.

Ye gods, it's just the same as wow/anything else. I hate the combat where you've got a limited amount of time before they close on you and then it's just trading blows

No idea what I'd come up with to make it more innovative, but so far, no deal for me

It is amazing how they talked the talk, and upon seeing this it is just the same old walk the walk. With even less sparkle than what is currently out there.

How many times can these dev's keeping running into the same wall before they figure out what is happening?

This is a bit like when they made SWTOR when everyone just wanted another offline rpg.

It's gonna have a $15 monthly sub-fee, which no doubt will equate to 10-12 quid here.

Forbes.com - Predicting the Biggest Video Game Disaster of 2014: The Elder Scrolls Online.

tl;dr - It has the budget of $200 million, the same as The Old Republic. Look how well TOR did! Also, only loonies pay monthly subscriptions for MMORPGs any more.

Being the first next gen console ES game will give it a boost the TOR never had. It's the first big console western MMO, so unchartered territory. Might actually do ok.
