Need some advice. Am going to buy a new phone in January as my HTC Desire is starting to show its age. On my shortlist are first and foremost the S3 (450eur unlocked) but noticed the S2 is available for 340eur. Is there any point in going for the older model apart from saving 100 bucks?

Also wondering if any of the LGs are worth considering and how they compare to the S3... any recommendations welcome!

To answer your first question, nope! The Galaxy S III is leaps and bounds better than it's little brother ... and since you mentioned LG, I would actually recommend the Nexus 4 over any other Android phone on the market, even with a flat coated glass back.

It is a 'Pure Google' phone; always the first to get the newest updates too.

Go into a phone shop and play around with some of them. You'll soon make your own mind up!

    Cheers will take a look.

How do the Nexus phones compare hardware wise to the S3? Would obviously prefer the superior software support, been annoyed with US sourced Galaxy tab which took Samsung ages to bring to 4.04.

Got the Premium Suite Update over the weekend. Very impressed. Multi-view is great but overall things seem smoother too. With the previous update I found touch wiz randomly crashing. Sees to have been fixed in this one.

Bought this phone today for 250 off my brother. Coming from an iPhone 4, I must say I'm mightily impressed. Bittorrent and antivirus... on a phone?! I've installed poweramp too, that app is awesome.

    Any other essential apps?

Of all the things to be impressed by, anti virus options are not one.

Have decided to go with the HTC one X (and not the GS3) due mainly to the 8meg camera and Beats sounds. Amazon have for 380 (they have the S3 for 400)
I know as soon as I buy the price will drop!

Why do people feel the need for ant-virus software on their android phones?

Is it because your downloading stuff ...dodgy stuff?

Unless you're sideloading lots of apps then there really should be no need for av or malware scanner.

There was a silly twat in currys that insisted I needed it and was trying to sell it to me half price when we bought the nexus 7. Fuck. Off.

Even if you dont sideload and only download official stuff from play or amazon you can spot the dodgy stuff a mile off.

    I always install these 5 ...

    Eurogamer (app) - nuff said
ES file explorer (app) - file manager
gReader (app) - customisable rss feed reader
    Birzzle (game)
    Wheres the water (game)

After a couple of months I'm not that impressed, it feels much slower and far less stable than an iPhone :-(

Well that's what I thought. I certainly don't bother with AV software on my GS3.

Then again I'm not an app whore that feels the need to have as many apps as possible :)

Same here, never used antivirus apps since I got my HTC years ago, never a problem but I stick to the Play store only and always read the feedback first, and also the permissions.

Did come across AVG though, it's free and has some nice functions on top of its core bits. Suppose the handiest thing is probably disabling/locating a lost phone (assuming it works - I dont lose phones).

On topic, held the GS3 in my hand in the Vodafone store the other day (PAYG for 580eur lol).

It's really quite a lot bigger than I remembered, not sure if this is just something to get used to - my HTC Desire feels tiny in comparison.

Do people here keep it in some protective case or is its build quality good enough to be kept in pockets on its own without starting to creak after a few weeks?

Mines fine in my pocket with keys and loose change. Just don't drop it.

I think there's something wrong with mine, it seems to be taking forever to charge and it keeps failing to read my memory card.

Good to hear. Heard here and elsewhere that the plastic cover feels a bit cheap but that won't bother me as long as it feels solid and doesn't come loose or starts to creak.

I haven't had memory card issues although charging does take a while.

    Portable view - Never forget.

It charges a lot quicker if you either turn it off or put it into airplane mode. If you use it heavily while charging you can actually drain it quicker than it can top the juice up.

Has anyone here had experience with the GS3 mini? Would prefer the smaller form factor but from reading some reviews it has worse specs (but is also 150eur cheaper) than its bigger brother.

It's not a GS3. Can't remember if it's specs are even superior to the GS2.

BTW anyone running resurrection 3.1.2 on the GS2 really should upgrade to 3.1.3, all my RAM worries have disappeared and the phone's running gorgeously smoothly.

Same as white iPhones, i usually go down the hairdresser route but I made an exception this time. Im disappointed in your lack of appreciation.

Also, my phone just did an update to give me some unspecified new features, which is nice of them.
