RAGE was a missed opportunity and felt all the poorer for it.

Rage suffered badly from "open world vague pointlessness syndrome". Not all open world games do, but quite a lot end up lacking in direction and missing meaningful and memorable highlights.

I suppose it's the polar opposite of the "too heavily scripted" effect you can get with the roller-coaster thing.

It was just as heavily scripted and linear imo, it just lacked everything that made it cohesive and likeable.

The problem with rage is that, yeah it had a hub world, but the missions, at least the ones I played, were the exact linear tunnel that people are complaining about.

Rather than a story contraivance causing you to go from point A to point B, by a cut scene or a trip on a swamp boat, it told you to go to point B then allowed you to fuck around on a quad bike for an hour.

Sod this open world lark. 99% of open world games are linear as fuck but with the horrible illusion of choice. Assassin's Creed is a good example - "look you can go skin bears and leap and frolic in the trees and go on naval raids and so on and so forth, but once you've finished arsing about please head to the flashing dot to continue the game properly". Or even something like GTA4 - sure, you can spend more time fucking around playing pool or darts or whatever the fuck than you can actually completing the story, but all it does is basically breaks the narrative flow. Spending an hour or two making your way up to five stars by destroying all and sundry in a tank only to have the next mission start with the protagonist agonising over the need to kill a single person in the story does not coherency make.

Give me a tight, controlled narrative any day of the week over those inconsistent time-wasters.

Okay, Steam just downloaded an update for HL2 and now the game is stuck in what I think is Korean.

Has someone at Valve just pressed the wrong update button or is the start of a new ARG thing like Portal's radios?

Shame about the typo on the final word. Or is it another clue?
