I'm having an issue on my new Acer Aspire 5750G laptop. When I boot into Windows 7 the desktop shows for about 4 seconds, but then the colours suddenly change and become a bit washed out, as if a bluey-grey opaque filter has been applied to the screen (maybe some post graphics processing at a guess). Whites visibly become a light grey, colours become a little washed out, and the screen generally becomes a bit harder to see.

This also occurs when you get a Windows 7 dialog prompt - the background darkens, the prompt appears which you click to continue, it goes back into what you were doing, then 4 seconds later this greyish filter gets applied to everything again.

Admittedly it's only a small issue, as I can still use my laptop, but I've played with the colour settings for hours as I thought something was a bit "off" about the screen since the day I bought it and things appeared a little too washed out. I've messed around with the Windows built in brightness and gamma as well as my graphics card brightness/contrast/gamma/hue/saturation and although this helped optimise my screen, none of it seems to be related to this strange filter that seems to be getting applied to my screen. It's annoying because the screen looks great and vivid for the 4 seconds before this filter kicks in.

I've extensively searched Google, found a lot of questions and answers regarding the (obvious) power management settings and colour adjustment settings and this problem simply isn't related to either. I can't find a 5750G owners thread, or anything helpful released by Acer, so I was hoping one of the ever helpful EG forum members may have an inkling as to what may be causing this. Any ideas or advice would be great. Cheers.

What sort of graphics card does that have? You don't have settings for 'film mode' or 'adaptive contrast' on your graphics control panel, do you? It sounds like it's adjusting your colour settings on the fly to 'help' you.

Yeah it really does seem like that's what's happening. It has integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics and a Geforce GT 520M GPU, which the laptop switches between depending on what I'm doing. That functionality actually seems to work really well, surprisingly. Most of the time, in a general windows desktop environment, the laptop uses the Intel integrated graphics.

I don't think I have a film mode selected anywhere, but I'm not sure where you do this. I actually disabled adaptive contrast completely (or whatever the brightness is that works from a laptop's brightness sensor) by accessing the 'msconfig' file and disabling it on startup.

The Intel GPUs have a control panel (which is usually in your icon tray). If you start this in advanced mode rather than basic mode then they're in the Media/Image Enhancement section. No idea if that will actually help or not, but it's probably worth a look.

Any chance you could disable one card or the other to see if it's just one in particular that's griefing you?

Yeah you can choose manually I think, so will try that.

Was also thinking of plugging my laptop into my TV via HDMI and seeing if I still get this issue. If I don't get the issue occuring on my TV I can at least narrow the problem down to laptop-specific settings, or the laptop screen itself, rather than software settings.

Cheers for your suggestions. Will try a few things later after work and post my results.

Also this (Tom's Hardware) could possibly be my exact issue from what's mentioned and a solution is offered, so will try this too.

I've had a look at the options you pointed me towards and the power saving features in the Tom's Hardware fix, but still no joy unfortunately.

I'm a bit wary about disabling the integrated Intel graphics because I'm not sure it will switch to my nvidia card automatically and I'll get stuck with a blank screen. The laptop seems heavily set up to switch between them when it feels it's necessary, but I noticed when I play a 720p .mkv file it still uses the on-board integrated Intel graphics strangely. Currently trying to find a way to purely use the Nvidia GPU without disabling the Intel graphics card completely.

Also I noticed the problem occurs every time I log on, when I lock/unlock Windows. If I lock the screen the colour on the lock screen looks normal, then after 3 seconds the greyness/brightness kicks in. Same when I unlock again.

Sounds like power save mode to me.

    FCUTA!

I think I've just found out what the problem is linked to. When I got the laptop I went into Control Panel -> Display -> Calibrate colour, which is a Windows-based colour option. Here I turned the gamma all the way down because the screen was far too washed out. This made the screen look a lot better.

If I turn the gamma all the way down now it cures this issue I'm having with the washed out filter being applied to the screen.

However, if I lock or reset my laptop and log back on again the screen issue comes back, as though Windows forgets my gamma setting.

I've narrowed the issue down further to the integrated Intel HD 3000 colour settings.

I set the colour settings on the Intel control panel so everything looked bright purple.

Then, when I lock/unlock the screen and the colours/gamma/brightness in Windows go back to normal for 3 seconds (and everything looks fantastic) and then after the 3 seconds my crazy purple settings kick in.

So basically I need to find a way to completely stop the integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics from interfering with my screen settings, as the Windows default settings are perfect already.

I can't seem to permanently set my laptop to use just my Geforce GT 520M GPU because the option doesn't seem to exist. My drivers for both GPUs are up to date.

Sorry to keep bumping my own thread, but I've found why I can't just pernamently use my Geforce GT 520M...because Nvidia Optimus simply doesn't work.

After deducing the problem was to do with the Intel 3000 graphics settings overriding my other windows-based display settings, I found this fix on the Intel forums and a few other people who have also had this problem.

Essentially it involves disabling the Intel process igfxpers.exe in msconfig. Very annoying problem solved and my screen looks great. I just hope it doesn't have any serious knock on effects.

Hope this helps other people in the same situation. This thread may be closed.

i don't know what knock on effects your solution may have but i found a much safer way.

click on start and type intel control center which will open a new window,
then click intel hd graphics , choose advanced mode and color enhancement.

you can edit the rgb sliders and brightness / contrast and the choices you make wont reset unlike using the windows calibration tool.
