Just wondering how many biters are out there and how ex-biters killed the habit.

My nails look like shit lately and I can't seem to stop myself from making them worse. I'm not at the stage where they're 3mm of cuticle or anything, but nevertheless, I still bite them.

Bought these today so rather than bitting the ragged bits off and making them even more ragged I can clip annoying, bitey bits off. Hopefully that'll work.

I've got a couple of sets of those (although without the cool looking cantilever arrangement) and they're good for a couple of fingers but useless for anything else as the curve's wrong. A simple set of nail scissors I bought years ago from boots do me fine.

I've never bit my nails, and it means my nails go right to the end of my fingers which to be honest is a bit of a pain sometimes. My DS has a shiny patch scored into it above the A button and above the D-pad, since even if I trim my nails right down to the cuticle, my nail still hits the DS case next to the button when I press it.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Surely it's cheaper to stick your fingers up your bum.

I have decimated my fingers over the last few months. The only thing standing between me and frequent pain/bleeding has been covering the worst attacked fingertips with plasters so I physically can't get at them, but the adhesive on the plasters comes with its own problems after prolonged use.

There's been quite a lot of stress and downers in my life lately though, I've always nibbled, but until last year, never this aggressively. Short of making that better, I'm not sure the nibbling will improve.

Mine are to the bone. I fucking love biting them. Fucking love it.

And that foul tasting stuff gets rather tasty after a while. The only way to stop is to stop using toilet paper.

Yeah, same here. Loads of stress and massive downers have taken their toll but things are starting to look up again and I want to ditch this shitty habit.

Are we talking Gordon Brown levels of disgustingness?

Life long nail biter here. Friends and family gave up telling me off for it. I'll never give it up, man!

No, definitely not Gordon Brown levels of bitery. I still have fairly nice nails if I grow them, but it's at the point where there's no white whatsoever on any of them.

I was wondering. If your nails get to Gordon Brown levels of gruff, can they ever get back to being normal?

I think it depends if you damage the nail bed.
I'm not at Gordon's level yet, but I'm getting there =/

Fuck it, who needs the white bits anyways. Yes sometimes I have to open a can of lager with a spoon, and my scratching is nowhere near as efficient as it should be, but fuck it, I really really like biting them. I'm doing it right now.

Apparently men with nails are better at pleasuring the other half.

Nah, I don't believe that. I can go years without biting my nails, but when things get stressful it takes wild horses to drag them from my mouth.

I used to bite my nails all the time as a teenager until a teacher pointed it out to me, I then essentially stopped from one day to the next.

It was merely a matter of realizing I was about to bite my nails and stopping myself from actually doing it. Because my teacher had pointed it out it sort of stuck in my mind, allowing me to preempt my urges.
After a while they vanished completely.

It felt weird having to use a clipper again for the first time.

Another nail biter here. Not too bad unless things get a bit stressy, and then the worst thing is tearing half the skin off at the side, leading to an horrendously painful cuticle.

I bite my nails. Once I decided to stop. So I just did. Then my nails grew long. Then it was uncomfortable and looked weird so I decided to start biting them again.

    True story.

I stopped when I was really young and for some reason have never been tempted to go back. Not even an urge.

Wish I could switch off other habits like that.

I've got much better and it's mainly through making sure that my nails are short and tidy so there aren't any annoying bits I want to bite off. I also chew gum and use that bitter nail varnish stuff. I've been particularly good recently, despite being utterly miserable for the last few months; for some reason stress and depression hasn't caused me to bite my nails like it usually does (and has for DB and MD).

Nevertheless I still nibble at them occasionally, although rarely to the point of causing pain or injury, and never so they look horrible like they used to when I was a child. Stopping once and for all seems extremely difficult.

Even though I'm rather sceptical when it comes to alternative therapies I've been toying with the idea of getting hypnotized to stop altogether. I'm a man of some vices right now, but I have, at various times in the past and for extended periods, managed to kick various habits such as smoking tobacco, smoking cannabis, drinking fizzy drinks, eating meat and drinking alcohol. Stopping all of those was a walk in the park compared to stopping biting my nails.
