Given the way google handled the change of interface to google mail and youtube (basically hinting, then forcing people to switch to the new one) - would I be correct in assuming that the new 'link your mobile phone for 'security reasons'' prompt is going to turn into an inescapable task at some point?

I don't have a mobile and I don't want one. Do I need to switch emails again and if yes, what's my best bet?

I doubt it somehow - I can't see them actively forcing people out of their system.

It's skippable for the moment, so you're good. I'd be surprised if they made it mandatory but maybe you can start yourself a back-up account if you're feeling unsure.

No idea what's good out there though.

Yeah, the style changes were skippable for a while, then forced, so I don't trust them not to lock me out of my account and make me sing and dance for them to get back in.

I can always go back to POP3, but I'd prefer webmail if anyone knows any decent alternatives.

It's already a requirement for new signups. It may be possible to get a payg SIM and activate it without paying anything in such a way that you can receive texts or calls.

Hmm, actually you should be able to associate it with a payphone number. They call you up and give you a computerised number to type in. I guess this is beyond the target of them associating it with your account, but it gets round the initial prompt you're forced to do for a new gmail account.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Stick your land line number in it.

The thing is though: forcing you to use a style just means that they can carry on adding new features. Forcing you (and a huge number of other people) out of your/their account (this isn't just email afaik) actively loses them information and so money - neither of which are things they can afford to lose any time soon (well, the former more than the latter). They're two completely different things.
