Past favourites include The Sopranos, The Wire, The Shield, Breaking Bad, Twin Peaks, the Killing (Danish version), Spiral

I know about HBO's lineup, but apart from that, it's not so easy to find new stuff if you're in Germany and don't use torrent sites. :)

As you can guess from my list above, I am generally more into series with overarching storylines rather than episodic ones, but it's no dogma.

The Almighty Johnsons. Its not really like any HBO stuff (well it does have tits and swearing) but its the best new series ive watched in ages.

Deadwood is brilliant, very painful in parts though.
    Also distinctly lacks an ending.

Another recommendation for Justified. My girlfriend and I have only just started watching it properly, we watched the first two episodes of the first series and were distinctly unimpressed but due to everyone saying it's awesome we have begun watching more and episode three and four were very good indeed.

Plus we both heart the Olyphant.

    Weeds.

Dark and painfully funny in parts.

When you can't see the angles on the wall you're in trouble.

Justified is CSI-esque, but better. it's production values and actors are largely below par (apart from Walton Goggins, who is awesome) it has that goofy, light entertainment type feel.

Boardwalk Empire is a great show if you are willing to invest time into it. it is performance based, but can have some sharp short high quality violence. worth noting too, that season 2 ramps up the excitement, season 3 should be very interesting. it is the The Sopranos set in the prohibition era... a few of its actors pop up in it, it has the same writer.

SOA is a must if you liked The Shield (which i loved) don't think the sons are as good, but it's a close second, and still essential. some crazy characters and great action.

Dexter is good, and it becomes great. it takes a good few episodes to get hooked. the acting is solid all around, if plot lines are sometimes far-fetched (but that's what makes it fun) and the performances from season-long guest actors Jimmy Smits and John Lithgow are nothing short of electric. also i loved Peter Weller as the dirty PI, he fit the role perfectly.

House of Lies is a 30-min comedy which threatens to become deeper. Don Cheadle is excellent in it, and the full show is really razor sharp. i was hooked after the first show, excellent. this i feel is an underdog that everyone should check out - the first episode at least.

I really liked Hell on Wheels.

Playing all the right notes— but not necessarily in the right order.

Justified gets going when it decides what it wants to be and just turns up the Dixie Mafia stuff to 11, great show.

Sons of Anarchy is great, even the comedy Irish bits.

Another vote for Deadwood, you cocksucker! too :)

    Damages & Homeland

Both are excellent and the former is very underrated. Damages gripped me from the opening of the first episode. This isn't your typical "legal drama", more of a thriller with an amazing use of timeshifting and some amazing cliffhangers. And there's four amazing seasons of Damages to work though too :)

Its really hard to beat The Wire ! But I'll second the recommendation for Battlestar Galactica - its fracking great but a bit hammy and there were the odd crap episodes after maybe the first two seasons (but if you like the first season you will put up with that).

Now if you were asking for comedy: you can't go wrong with Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld. And if you get (admittedley ancient) British humour then Dads Army and the ITV production of Jeeves & Wooster.

Lost is pretty entertaining, but the fans seem to have a love/hate relationship with it.

Mad Men is also great, but it's slow... if you've got the patience, it definitely pays off.

Fringe goes from OK episodic type in the first season, to much more engrossing and over-arching in the second season (where I currently am) and is helped by the wonderful acting of John Noble.

Kooky Sci-Fi-Horror, so not really what you listed, but myself and the wife are currently enjoying it.

I've turned off all the avatars and crap, so don't expect me to be impressed by yours.
