I baked my first cake today. I was stuck for the cake recipe that I am after, so had to ask YouTube. Apologies if you don't speak german, but it is basically a lady doing an apple cake.

    The ingredients were clearly listed:

    50 g Butter
    2 Eggs
    150 g Sugar
    150 ml Milk
    250 g Flour
    4 Apples
    Cinnamon and brown sugar

until you got to the very nebulous "1 pack of baking powder". Like whoa, how much is that in grams. But anyways, the cake mix seemed a lot runnier than the one in the YouTube video. Here it is before being baked.

and here it is after it came out of the oven, ready to cool down.

I'll let you know how it all tasted.

@solidSCB: It's got a bit of MaruMaro in it.

@RedSparrows: Course you can. As soon as you tell the world how much you *really* love Blue Dragon.

@DDevil: Thank you. It was my first cake and I can't quite tell where I went wrong yet. Maybe didn't put in enough baking powder. But hopefully it will taste good.

@Vice.Destroyer Nah, it looks fine. It hasn't risen a huge amount and it's burnt on the edges but you can't go far wrong with an apple sponge.

About 19 years ago a Canadian girl staying with my family made a an apple cake type thing.

It was one of the greatest things I have ever tasted.

I would kill to know that recipe. Let me know who yours turns out.

    It looks 'rustic'.

Nah, like DDevil says, it'll taste fine. It's an apple sponge, for goodness sake!

Do you spend a lot of time searching for videos of German people doing apple cakes?

He just searches German women doing various things in general. The cake was a happy accident.

I suppose you would have no reason to know this. But I actually spent my formative years and a lot of my childhood in Germany.

Lol. That is a great scene. Almost as good as my mate getting caught fully naked wanking by his old man who was cleaning the windows.

I just dared to take a bite from my cake. I will admit, I wasn't looking forward to it. My cake really does look like shit. But it tastes really nice. I am really surprised.

If a cake recipe tells you to use to use baking powder, just switch the plain flour to self-raising and forget about it. It's a rising agent which is already mixed into self-raising flour in the right proportions anyway, so it's one less thing to remember/ work out.

A few places do sell premeasured sachets if for some reason you want less ingredients to measure but don't want to switch to self-raising flour. Which I'm assuming is what they meant by "a pack".

Also if your cake "looks like shit, but tastes really nice" then it was probably just a bit overcooked round the edges and you had the oven set slightly high. As a general rule you're better off setting the oven slightly lower than what the recipe actually says and keeping an eye on it, it'll cook more evenly that way.

It's far from the worst first attempt at a cake that I've seen though, at least it was edible. :)

Thanks for the kind words and the tips. I shall keep them in mind for the next cake. I wish that there was a way to share this cake with you, I would like to see what people that know about baking think of this cake. I'm obviously biased, but it tasted really nice.

Remember, you haven't done it REALLY wrong until you accidentally put the grill on instead of the oven, and just destroy the top of the (otherwise raw) cake mixture.

    Good times :)
