    If you didn't think Vita was in trouble before, you'll certainly want to start worrying now. Vita nosedives from it's recent high to finally crash below the 10,000 barrier and just missing the 9000 barrier as well. Worrying times for Vita and a bleak outlook on the software front in Japan certainly won't do much to lift any of the recent gloom Sony have been hit by.

    Still, at least Sony's older hardware is selling with PSP's latest Robot Wars iteration romping home while Kingdom Hearts 3D drops a massive 80% from last week...

    It's strange to think that the 3DS is already just 1.5 million shy of the PS3 and that it'll probably eclipse it before the year is out. Handhelds really seem to be the future in Japan.

    Final Fantasy X HD is. Phantasy Star Online 2 is newish. Persona 4 is a port but with added stuff. not sure if you define that as a port or a enhancement (an enhanced port :D)

    Its an odd situation Sony is in. The Japanese Market just is not ready to give up the PSP and it just doesn't need the Vita. The PSP is still very well supported by 3rd parties whereas Sony has dropped it completely. It's not as if they should tell 3rd party companies to stop making games for it, but they would like them to move on. But why would they if the Market doesn't demand it?

    On the other side of the world, the wests view is that the PSP died years ago and probably was ready for the Vita a year ago (probably more so than the 3DS). So what does Sony do? It confuses me why they quite clearly should be gunning for the western Market but decided to launch it in Japan months before the west. Especially considering their software lineup reflects a more western focus.

    Sony should concentrate on building up support from western developers and increasing it's market share over here. It should still be supporting the PSP in Japan and helping the Japanese market to transition to the Vita by offering developers incentives to create sequels on the Vita that did well in Japan (Persona, Legends of heroes and that monster hunting game). The Vita isn't doomed, it'll just take longer than the 3DS to build up sales. They are still doing well with PSP so it's not all bad. They just have to do well in the West. Which I think it will.

    The thing with the west is that home consoles are still king. Handhelds are more popular than ever, but when it comes to the so-called 'hardcore', they'll take a giant flat screen TV over a 3 inch screen anyday. I guess it all comes down the kinds of games each region prefers and what platforms they're most suited to.

    Problem with the US is that the phone and tablet have well and truly taken over. Then you have kids who will go with an iPod Touch or 3DS. Nobody cares about the Vita. There's no need or place for it.

    A price drop seems to be their only choice/hope. Just a matter of timing at this point. Sony's probably willing to wait it out longer than we think they should.

    Sold something like 225k in its first few days, which I thought was pretty good. Hard to predict what this month will look like based on that, though.

    225k is far from good for what was 11 days of sales (including the pre-release bundles which went on sale early). The 3DS managed 400k in 7 days, and that was considered overpriced for what it was.

    Would be surprised if it breaks 250k this month.

    Other handheld launches for comparison:

    Yeah, but who honestly expected the Vita to outsell or even come close to the 3DS? With Sony, I've learned to temper my expectations.

    Look at the tiny segment of people they're marketing to, ffs. I'm surprised the thing sold more than 50k.

    Of course in comparison they're not very good, though.

    Given it's much more hardcore focussed than the 3DS the launch month was exactly when it had a good chance of being strong (like the PSP was). Hardcore gamers are exactly the sort to pre-order or rock up to midnight launches... and that it couldn't even manage to grab a quarter of a million of them I wouldn't put too much faith in how it's going to do going forward.

    You've only got to see it taking 16 weeks to match its first week numbers in Japan to get an idea of what's in store for it in the rest of the world. If not worse.

    Well, my prediction for Vita from early on was that it would be a slow burner. So I'm not at all surprised by its start.

    It's just way too expensive, imo. Let's face it, the price tag is $250, but realistically you're not walking out of there paying any less than $325-$350 with only one game. That's on top of the fact that Sony is putting so much emphasis on if you want to get the "most" out of a Vita, you need a PS3 as well.

    So if you don't already own a PS3 and don't have around a grand to spare, a Vita is out of the question. If you do already have a PS3, maybe you'd think about it. They need to put the PS3 functionality on the back burner -- make it seem like a device anyone would want to own -- and cut the price by $100... or at the very least include a game or effing memory card. I think the mem. card nonsense alone is a huge detriment to sales for the Vita.
