Some people play games for 8+ hours a day I guess. School kids and students probably have loads of free time for gaming.

When I got it on the Wednesday before launch the highest player already had 27,000.

I'm on about 17,000 and mainly just play online, not sure how many hours I've clocked up, maybe 12?

EDIT: I also don't like the idea of grinding out coins via the mini-games, I've only played them a few times so I use star mario as my character, some Miis are so fast and powerful I may have to try using my Mii in order to compete and keep it fun :(

you have 17,000 after only 12 hours im nearing 21 and only just reached 10,000 and 100 wins last night

I seem to be playing around the 2000 -2100 mark sometimes i reach the giddy heights of 2200 others i drop to 1980 but usually it is between 2000-2100

My rating is normally around 2100-2200 sometimes dropping below after a bad run.

The system seems weird, I actually lost points as somebody with a much lower rating took me into a tiebreaker which I won!

I'll check activity log, but sure I've not clocked up that much, the highest game on my list is MK7 and that's at 31 hours.

I actually quite like that system it rewards good play rather then just good results

The rating system seems to be designed in such a way as to take into account not only rating but actual match performance. If you play someone rated 200 points lower then ideally you should beat them easily. I believe that you can lose rating points even if you win, depending on the final score and rating difference of players.

I feel a bit dirty but think I'm going to try customizing my Mii (if its not too much grinding) to see how much of a difference it makes, The majority of people use the Miis so they must be more powerful/faster than star characters.

Some players with a high rating just seem so return anything as their Mii is so bloody quick.

Does anybody know how racket/wristbands etc are unlocked? Is it a case of just playing single player to build up the coins?

Equipment is unlocked randomly from playing tournaments and exhibition matches. I suppose that the more expensive stuff is more powerful. Complete matching sets probably give additional bonuses e.g. all rainbow equipment or all bowser etc. You will still have to earn coins to purchase the unlocked stuff by playing the mini games.

What is all the fuss with the rainbow outfit? I tend to have harder matches against people using it no matter thier rating is it really that much better?

It's a shame you cant compare your mii to star characters as it would be helpful to know what the difference between the two are

Boring afternoon at work so searching, apparently the following is a good setup (nobody seemed to mention the rainbow outfit:

Metal Mario Racket or blooper racket
    Blooper Wristband or Bowser Wristband
    SS Outfit or Luma Outfit
    Lakitu Shoes

If we can coordinate between us hopefully we can start online matches with fellow forumites where we all agree to use non star Nintendo characters. The matches would then be reasonably fair.

Sounds like a good idea! Some of the stuff in the shop is super-expensive so I'm guessing that's the good stuff folks online are using. I have the rainbow outfit on at the moment. (Not literally. Though it is Friday night.)

How do you unlock characters? I've only managed three or four hours of this and basically just playing all the cups (the first four that is) trying to get all the characters to "star" characters. Done Mario, Luigi and Peach so far and one more cup with Yoshi to go.

I will be online at 2pm today and will create a 'eurogamer' room. If you're on my friend list you should be able to see it. Let me know if you can play multiplayer at this time. I want to see how we might be able to get a season of eurogamer tournaments going but I'm not exactly sure how the friends room feature works online.

Ok, fair enough. If anyone goes online to play, post a message here so that we can try to get some games going with other forum members. From now on, I will check here before playing online.

There's something about this game that makes me want to buy it every time I see it in the demo-pods in the shops. However the mixed responses make me very apprehensive.

So is it any good? (I hope the amount of posts in this thread isn't an indication...) It will mostly be short bursts of single player for me, plus my kids will probably like it. I haven't played any of the previous Mario Tennis titles, so I'm not "spoiled" / haven't got any reference.

The tennis mechanics are great it is really good in short bursts.(until I went online and it become a major time sink) the only problem is the single player is very samey

@Afiddes - Cheers! Do you mean samey as in "low difficulty curve" or samey as in "it's tennis"? ;)

What I'm looking for is a game that does the same what Ridge Racer did for me on the PSP: unexpectedly addictive, great in short bursts (~15 minutes), just plain fun.

Samey as in there are only 3 tounamonts and they use the same few courts and until you get to the harder difficulty you will realise you can use the same few tricks to win. The mini games are fun but quickly grow pointless.

There are 8 tournaments, each for singles and doubles.

Trouble is, you can use Simon Says gameplay till the last tournament, there's little difficulty curve to speak of. It's only online that you realize there's a decent game of tennis hidden away.

It's an OK game but any version of Virtua Tennis I've played was a lot better.

Thanks for the info though! I think will let my mood decide if I see it for a good price :)

Ok, I bought it (37 euros wasn't too bad a deal). I actually went to buy an eShop points card for Picross E and caved in.

First impression (having played 2 minigames and the first mushroom tournament) - Fun! :)

I still haven't got around to playing this one. I do like my tennis games, but I like variety in play. I actually found the Virtua Tennis games couldn't offer this and you could pull off the same tricks over and over again, even against human opposition, which is strange and unrewarding.

I'd like to say it would be great to organise some online games, but we haven't done all that well with Mario Kart. :(

I should wait until i've got the game, really.
