I think this is going to be ace in online multiplayer mode.

I'm interested in this game because the mechanics are likely to be great, going by the standard the series has set, and because it has online play. The lack of any kind of decent single player wouldn't have phased me much. Of the 65 hours i've racked up on Mario Kart 7 , less than 10 of those would have been spent on 3-starring the Single Player mode.

The only downside of single player, from what I have read, is that the first few cups are trivial easy. Exactly the same as the gamecube version, although the last couple of tournaments were brutal.

Going by the IGN review this sounds a bit fucked online:

"Online competition won’t be fair since players can’t omit gyroscope players’ ability to automatically navigate the court."

Being the sad git I am, I created the following page, add your code so we can get some decent non-gyroscope games :)

I'll put my code on that link if I get the game. Gone from instant buy to on-the-fence - not because of the lack of RPG stuff, couldn't care less, but because of online being potentially fucked. Odd that only IGN has picked up that point.

My copy arrived today (thanks shopto!). Spent most off the time online, there's two modes casual or intense, casual is a tie breaker (first to 7 else two points clear, well if the both are on 6 then it goes advantage then win). Second is a set match where first to 3 or if it's at 2-2 then it goes to a tie breaker.

Only had 1 game where I experienced lag and I've played it loads, have 20 win medals (you get one for each victory, the other players Mii appears as a coin).

Games are fairly short although if the opponent matches your skill level then games can go on for ages.

    Great fun, worth £30 IMO.

I was really excited for this game but I have to be picky with my games. I just got Diablo 3 (thank you game) Adam picking up heroes of ruin in a few weeks so mario tennis will just have to wait

Got my Amazon order yesterday. Played a bit and my first impression is that it's a good solid tennis game. It doesn't have the overpowered wackiness of the GameCube version but that's no bad thing imo. Will hopefully get a chance to play online today.

Yeah, I've had some very lopsided matches because of the chance shots. Also some people seem to have really powerful Miis, with bullet serves etc. I've lost quite a few matches 7 - 1 or 7 - 2 due to this. Boo is a hard character to play against because of his bendy shots. So far I'm about 30% wins and 70% defeats online. I'm playing with gyroscope off and using normal button controls. Breezed through the first 4 single player tournaments but then lost the final of the next tournament to Mario. So far I'm actually enjoying it a bit more offline than online, which is something I never thought I'd say.

My first impressions are the mini games are hugely addictive. The main tennis game is good, but I'm not sure how deep the gameplay is yet.

Want this but want to ask can you turn off the special shots and just play a NORMAL game of tennis? and can you turn off the special shots online? just want to play a normal game of tennis with some depth no crazy shots

I don't think you can turn them off. Thing is, they are exagerated versions of winning shots and appear when there is an opening. A purple chance is just a fancy overhead smash for example.

If you just want a game of 'normal' tennis you will be better with virtua tennis on another format.

My battery on my 3DS just ran out - first time thats happened in a long time. Addictive stuff.

Got a bit more play in during the weekend and my overall impression us that it is a good game but doesn't quite hit the heights I've come to expect from Nintendo. I really miss the gimmick courts from the previous version. Now there are a lot of different courts but they only vary in ball speed and bounce. On the other hand I really do not miss the game flow breaking crazy animations from the gc version.

The single player mode seems a bit light on content but multiplayer really is where it shines. AI is very challenging on Pro level. The tennis is good and solid and the chance shots make a lot if sense. If you return the ball late or awkwardly then that naturally gives your opponent an opportunity to finish the rally. However, chance shots are not automatic winners. A score of 7/10 makes sense - it's just missing that little bit of sparkle and unique Nintendo touch. Still, I'm glad I bought it and can see I'll play it often.

To be fair though, a chance shot is not a guarantee that it's a point winning shot, I don't think they are that overpowered.

Completed the 1st 4 tournaments, which unlocked Star mario - which I think means he is improved, as my serves can go up to 222

Online is a lot of fun, although I've experienced lag a few times and had some "Communication Errors".

I'll add all the codes that people have put on http://mariotenniscodes.atwebpages.com/

I completed the 6th tournament on the train this morning. Won 3 sets to zero against daisy but nonetheless it was a tough battle. I've been using my Mii but might switch over to another character to see how that changes things. Every match seems quite different and you need to adapt your play style depending on your opponent.

I've had good online connectivity, with only 2 games lagging. I'm losing more than I'm winning but having fun anyway.

£20 - £25 I reckon. Its a decent tennis game overall but it is just missing enough to tip it into the "must have" territory.

Its a game I would prefer to have on the SD card rather then a seperate cart. Hopefully this will happen as Nintendo plan on releasing full games on the eShop when that new New Super Mario Bros comes out.

I'm a little annoyed that Camelot's excuse for not expanding the singleplayer content to include an RPG element or any of the other portable Mario Tennis traditions.

They clearly haven't focused on the multiplayer mode. All in all, the title is quality but feels like Camelot have dialled it in rather than made an effort.

Probably Nintendo putting them under unnecessary pressure to develop the game in 3 months or something stupid.

Agree with this valuation, but as it's a Mario game I can't see it going lower than £25.

Had a good string of wins online tonight, followed by a poor string of defeats. There really is lots of fun to be had online - one day you can be winning loads, the next getting slaughtered. One thing that is quite annoying is that you don't earn any coins from playing online so you have to play the mini games over and over. I can see that getting quite repetitive. I've played a few people online who seem to have really souped up Mii characters with excellent equipment which makes it difficult to compete. I don't fancy having to spam mini games just to be competitive online. Coins can also be earned via streetpass but I've yet to pass anyone with the game.

The lag is pretty offputting... I played this over a BT Infinity 2 connection at work and still had input delay. Breaks any flow you think you've got going.

Strange as MK7 runs smooth as silk in comparison.

Oh, and one more thing! Why does this not have the "Join Friend's Game" option in the Friends List?

AFAIK you can have a room open and ready to join but there's no way that anyone on your list would know this. Very sloppy stuff.

3DS needs another firmware update and this time allow people to send invites to games!
