Blow my mind? No, I was providing Derbs with an example of where he might find Apple users that are less than bright, since he seemed to be struggling :p

Aesthetics are one thing, but when these same students spend half their time complaining about how 'poor' they are and how they can't afford to eat proper food and oh look we're having ketchup sandwiches because we have no money aren't we zany, it makes it somewhat difficult to swallow when you see them behind machines that, frankly, ARE expensive. I'm not gonna go into the whole 'debate' about whether or not they're overpriced, but it's simply a fact that you can get a laptop that does the basic job just as well for around half the price of a new Macbook Whatever. An average student doesn't NEED a Mac. I don't have an issue with people buying things because they're nice, but students are a prime example of Mac users simply buying into the hype. Probably because they aren't people, as Crispy so rightly put it.

I know I'm generalising here, and there are students who can reasonably justify having bought a Mac, but there's a ton who would just babble some secondhand nonsense about Windows being buggy and Macs being safer if questioned on why they bought a Mac rather than the alternative (which is the attitude that caused me to post this thread so gleefully). That's the ones who could even come up with any reason at all - generalising again here, but asking female students why they've bought a Mac will give you more than enough evidence that there are plenty who simply buy into the hype.

I miss the days when a Gateway 2000, Pentium 200 packing 32MB of EDO RAM was top end stuff and cost 2 grand with a cow print box. PC users didn't have such a high horse to reign on back then.

Asking female students why they bought their Mac is a great icebreaker in the SU bar though Fatigeuz. Or more accurately, why daddy bought it for them, with the student discount, with the company credit card.

Considering most of my student loan was spent on beer and food, I'd say a Macbook is a relatively sensible purchase (not that I had one. I had a laptop my Granny kindly paid for, that by the end of the three years was riddled with viruses, pornography and cracked software.)
There's an awful lot of assumption in your argument anyway. Let people buy what they want. It's not my problem...

But that is just students being wankers. Nothing to do with buying macs. Same applies to moaning about being poor but spending all their money on alcohol. Or gadgets, ahem. And for every cunt buying it for the hype there is another student cunt who fancies himself a mini Che because he never. Your analogy really doesnt bring anything to the table because students are cunts regardless.

Anyone I've gone Android now SO FIGHT THE POWER etc. etc.

Lukus: sure, I agree. My post probably made it sound like I walk around universities on a serial rampage, smacking people's Macbooks to the ground in quick succession, but in reality I'm really not fussed. People can spend/waste their (parents') money however they see fit. Like I said, I also have no problem with people buying nice things for themselves. My issue is pretty specifically with students; as I said, they don't (for the vast majority of courses) NEED whatever advantages a Mac may offer over any decent laptop, and to hear complaints about money for necessities like food/accommodation fees etc. when they have bought an expensive laptop is just daft.

mowgli: yes, I know. If you look at the whole point of the post in the first place, it was a response to Derblington asking where all the retarded Mac users are. You can't then go "OK yeah they are but they don't count because they're cunts!". I agree with you about alcohol and so on, but it doesn't make the point any less valid.

The 15% educational discount helps, plus they probably have some resale value at the end of your course. My little Macbook will be 5 in May and its still going strong.

Edit: Edit for forgetting that Its May that comes after April XD

The "doesn't get PC viruses(sic)" still sort of stands though. It gets Mac specific ones.
