How much does console design philosophy change things?
Are they designed differently to PCs nowadays? Or is it just the unchanging hardware spec that allows them to optimise specifically for the components and get better and better performance?

Have most of the launch titles for each console been surpassed would you say? Are most console classics released in their twilight years?

I reckon both systems will end up putting out some pretty decent games and if the economies take an upswing by the time the next next-gen rolls around maybe we'll see the supercomputer consoles us lot are after. But there's no way you could release a 500-600 console these days and expect them to fly off shelves.

    This signature intentionally left blank.

It's fixed hardware that forces developers to optimise everything to wring every last drop of sparkle out of aged hardware as the generation creeps on. And they have to because expectations increase but this coming generation will see less graphical improvement than the previous generations because we're reaching the top of the hill as far as polygons go.

In about 10 years ray tracing will (maybe) be a viable option which would change the map somewhat as far as visual realism goes, but games will be so prohibitively expensive to produce when it comes around that few people will be able to develop them to the sort of depth that most have come to expect from the current generation.

It doesn't just force them to optimise, it helps them to. It's a positive as well as a negative.

It has pros and cons, but overall it's definitely more forcing as time goes on.

Also allows time that would be spent constantly grappling with amorphous MS APIs, QA'ing the shit out of 1.2Gayzillion hardware combinations and .... getting it running on Windows, to be spent on, like, art assets and gameplay and shit.

Although the time is more likely to be spent strapping on some shit Co-op and / or a very pretty pogo-stick mini-game or summit.

Except those various components are adhering to api's like DirectX which is one size fits all, leaving developers to worry on things like art assets and gameplay. The combination argument has been irrelevant since SVGA popped it's clogs.

A more cogent argument is that consoles don't need api layers and can be coded on the metal, meaning they are capable of getting far better performance out of lesser hardware.

In short, with a shitload of coaxing and optimisation time that could be spent on art assets and gameplay, the mid-range PC hardware in these consoles can be made to do things possibly slightly beyond a current top spec PC can.

Not that art assets or gameplay factor into any part of it, because the coders couldn't art or play their way out of a paper fucking bag.

Well if these specs mean 3 or 4x the power of current consoles then thats great and more ram which was what we were all asking for.I'm sure the games will look stunning and be a real leap as they always are when new consoles are released. My only concern for sony is that it may be a bit late going by what i've read on here about their financial state and how the hell is vizz gonna cope without cell:)

Dirtbox makes a good point; it's gonna be fun watching the fanboys desperately scramble for something they can hoist their flags on. I'm putting money on cooling methods being one of the great fronts in this coming war.

I do fear the mental pressure may be too much for at least one of them.

I wonder what shite Sony have crammed into the Dualshock to make it 'evolved'.
  • Deleted user 29 January 2013 04:18:20
Probably a rear touch pad thing. They wouldn't really need to change the design to shove anything on the front, then. Maybe bulk it a tiny bit.

Not that good at reading are you? Try looking a few posts up where I state almost exactly the opposite.

Jobseeker is a bit of a stretch for an unemployable thicko, but there's always work in the council and those streets don't sweep themselves I suppose.

JobSeekersAllowance, you have 6 posts after registering 1 hour ago, giving you a scientific post-rate of 6 posts per hour, compared to dirtbox's 0.825 per hour on average. Now, I calculated that with science, so it's FACT. Think about it, and reflect on your shockingly high post rate...

It has apis just like the PS3 and Wii does. They're just not as obtructive as on the PC, which has a multitasking operating system and variable hardware strengths as well.

If the PS3 didn't have apis then they wouldn't be able to port middleware games to it.
