How impressive can a $400/500 console in 2012 with a power limit of roughly 200 watts really be?

    What would be impressive?
If they came out with something very powerful and expensive you'd have a go.
If they do something reasonable you have a go.

Don't think he's having a go when he suggests they're doing what he thinks would be best.

Not having a go, I applaud their apparent attack of common sense.

Midrange AMD multicore and a radeon = cheap as chestnuts and easy to code for compared to pouring billions into wasted Cell R&D.

I meant unimpressive in that they aren't squandering their cash on expensive and pointless bollocks that gets the misinformed fantards frothing but does nothing good whatsoever.

In fact, after all that bluster and hyperbole, it's pretty funny to see them drop the Cell like a hot brick.

To be fair to Sony, they dropped all the hyperbole after that crazy guy got replaced by Kaz Whatsisface. The SDF have kept it going ever since.

Early reports coming in that the Liverpool GPU can only render people bright orange and wearing pyjamas.

    Haha, neilka.

Lets see them get whipped up about a bunch of bargain bin PC components.

I just can't believe that blu-ray speed is right. 3.3x - 6.0x vs a 2x in the the PS3... and 8x the RAM to fill.

Get ready for utterly massive mandatory installs.

So you can play the games without looking at the screen.

That's a good idea! I bet it's just as good as playing games while looking at the screen. Anyone who says otherwise is an elitist snob.

So are these rumoured specs similar to the rumoured specs of the next Xbox?

From what we know so far, a little more powerful.

    Same CPU
    Same blu-ray drive
PS4 has faster memory, but less of it 4gb vs 8gb (3.5gb usable vs 6.0gb usable)
PS4 has faster GPU (about 50% faster on paper)

Yep, they're fairly identical, PS4 just about edges it but there'll be about as much difference between ports as there was this gen.

    18 texture units
Isn't that a rather low amount?

Suits me. I install all my 360 games and hope I can install all my next-gen games to the hard drive, too, assuming I don't just buy them digitally in the first place.

It's not particularly impressive by modern PC GPU standards, no.

Does that mean textures will barely be above the standard of the 360/PS3 and there'll be a lack of anisotropic filtering?

Doesn't mean anything at all because Sony won't be able to use DirectX anyway, that's just the GPU's spec with it being originally build for games on windows.

The more lacklustre these new console specs turn out to be, the more likely I am to make a Steamstationbox. Despite poo-pooing it earlier, ahem.

Actually, that's a bit shallow. There will be far more factors than specs, but I was hoping for a proper step up in what the new consoles could potentially achieve after seven or eight years.

How could anyone realistically expect more than that?
A 1.8 Teraflop GPU, loads of bandwidth, decent low power CPU and a good amount of really fast RAM ffs.

It'll be possible to have stunning looking games on it and the Durango, what'll be more of interest is the software support. Both machines will be great.

It is a proper step up, now consoles are about as powerful as a current mid-range PC. Before they were about as powerful as a ten year old mid-range PC.

So, these new consoles, will they be able to run Battlefield 3 with the equivlant of PC ultra settings and 1080p? Or how about even crysis or GTA IV with graphics mods?

Genuine question. I have no idea how how these rumoured specs translate into performancrme in real terms

Probably not in it's current state, no. If it were built and optimised from the ground up for that hardware then yes, it could.

It means developers have a much higher ceiling for graphical improvement, which is a bad thing really because games will cost a lot more to produce, but the horse power is there for Battlefield 4 to look the same as the PC version when it comes out.
