Ditching Cell based rubbish for a cheapo AMD cpu. No doubt they'll sling a reasonably up to date bottom of the range GPU into the Microstar motherboard and pop in a 40 LiteOn bluray drive.

Just like buying a shit computer from PC world.

I assume this is a good thing? As means the PC is still king but the other part of me thinks this is bad as doesnt raise the bar which console generations are meant to do.

    Iam conflicted

It at least means the ports won't be the unoptimised shit they've been in the past.

It's amusing to see the backpeddle though. The "Cell will do everything! 1 billion teraflops! Developers must work hard to unlock it's power!" rubbish hamstrung the PS3 throughout it's entire life. When a console 12 months it's senior has the best version of every multiplatform game that came out, you know you've bought into some hyperboleic shite.

All the 360s that are 12 months it's senior are landfill.

Kinda like most of the launch PS3s.

Maybe next gen will introduce adequate cooling from day 1.

The problem wasn't so much the cooling, it was the lead-free zinc solder they used.

Well that in conjunction with heating/cooling cycles. They can't go back to leaded solder.

Indeed. Plus they seem to like having people re-buy their hardware at least a couple of times over the course of a generation so probably no, there won't be adequate cooling.

The cell was a disaster, but it was typical sony.

"Hey, lets invent our own way of doing stuff when there's a perfectly serviceable alternative that already achieves to same task!"

To be fair most PCs dont tend to last 5 years+.

Althourgh thats not a reliblity issue, thats more that technology moves so fast so you want to replace components. And overclock the nuts off most parts Yay

I do agree with the article on its point about "The cutting edge has lost its point" though. I just don't think bleeding edge hardware is as important to many people any more. Incremental improvement in performance over recent years don't really deliver whizbangery in the way that technology had advanced in the 20-odd years preceding that.

Actually most do. I could go into specifics, but I'd rather not bore you. However if something goes it's just a case of replacing a cheap part. Consoles are much less modular.

Unless you're talking about the upgrade cycle? That doesn't necessarily hold true either. I think it's pretty fair to say all platforms have around about the same type of usable life expectancy.

Its all down too costs. The graphical leap next gen will not be as pronounced as in previous generations imo, at least not to most of the gaming public. Sony can not afford the investment in developing new technology this time round and the world is nt really in a position to buy a 350-400 console with slightly better looking games. The key next gen is how Sony and ms will find a new 'gimmick' to make us all buy again.

Heh, current console games look horrific and aren't even at a decent resolution.

There's loads of room for improvement.

Thats why they are not investing in new technology just using off the shel components

Final Fantasy XIII is better on the PS3. I think we can all agree that's a major selling point.

There's plenty of scope for improved graphics over this generation. You still see plenty of low-res textures, poor filtering, tearing, often lack of anti-aliasing etc,

If the next gen can really provide 1080p60 gaming with visual quality to match the resolution then that will be a very welcome leap over what we have now.
  • Deleted user 2 April 2012 19:04:28
720p with good image quality would be a better target.

I'd rather they use the better specs to improve the shadows, tearing, aliasing and framerate of what they've got, instead of just upping polygon counts and getting the same shit for another generation. Major room for improvement as others have said, but if they just try to make everything shinier for the next round of pissing contests it'll be for nought.

    gameplay>graphics
True but why can't we have both? It's not as if games are developed by one person, whose time is divided between either gameplay or graphics.

I hardly think that's unobtainable since PC's have been doing exactly that for several years now.

Neither do I, which is why it should be what we get.
