Karl Pilkington is taller than I imagined. That's all I got of benefit from that trail.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Isn't gurning for the cameras something he railed against in Extras? All the hate he has for lowest-common denominator shows was channeled through "When The Whistle Blows", but that seems to be what this is (based on the trailers).

Imma watch it, regardless of all the moaning I'm doing.

It's dire. What's worse, it's hard to tell retarded Gervais from normal Gervais.
  • Deleted user 12 April 2012 22:23:47
It's not even the offensive funny that it's trying to be. It's just shit, like a school play that doesn't even have your own kids in it that you have to watch shit.

Are they bringing back Life's Too Short for a 2nd season? I thought that was all right, but how many short jokes can you do before it gets old.

I don't think it's trying to be offensive. There's some quite subtle stuff going on I think
  • Deleted user 12 April 2012 22:31:06
With better lead actors maybe. Gervais isn't an actor that can do subtle.

Nothing subtle at all. The character is far too cartoony and gormless for what they are trying to pull off. The second part got a bit better, but it was still hopelessly bad.

I don't really know how this can be considered much of a comedy. The only bit that got a chuckle was Pilkington's "Clean the fucking lot out" line.

Thought it was ok. Was a fair attempt - no meaness and a pretty heartfelt look at someone who's a bit simple. Didn't really work, mainly due to gervais not pulling off the character particularly well. Liked the bit in the bus though. So yeah kind of ok. Still a lot better than 90% of the absolute horse shit British TV normally churns out.

I thought it was alright. Not laugh out loud funny, but vaguely enjoyable for some reason.

I think Aargh. has it spot on though. It'd be a lot better with anyone other than Gervais starring in it. His "acting style" just doesn't suit what he's trying to do in this show.

It's a weird one, when it was trying to be funny with some pathetically poor slapstick it was absolutely terrible but other than that it wasn't actually bad at all. Not sure I'd want to watch an entire series though.

    This space left intentionally blank.

    This.

A shame really, With a capable actor cast in the lead role, this could actually be quite watchable in a good sense - as opposed to watchable a bad car crash sense.

I'm glad someone else liked it too. Certainly wan't laugh out loud funny, but don't think that's the intention.

Also thought that the death of the old dear was really well handled and choked me right up it did.

It was alright, a little short for a one off though.

Was strange. I'd watch it again I think but agree with the comments above.
Biggest turn off for me is that Gervais really isn't a character actor, and whilst the sentimental stuff at the end was actually good, the rest of his bits left me thinking "that's Ricky Gervais doing his "mong face"".

Writing wise, I liked it. He does gentle comedy-drama really, really well.

    Oh, bugger i missed it..!

I really like Karl and wanted to see what he was like as an actor.

From the clips, it just looked like he was playing Karl.

Karl was Karl. Did alright though.

Funny that Gervais seems to have the golden ticket where nobody gets offended even though he's doing a playground impression of a handicapped.

I mean, I know the audience and the way it is written, you're on his side and everything, but it's just so piss poor with the facial contortions and everything.

    Dunno.
