I thought the pilot was better, but i'm a sucker for being emotionally manipulated. |
Shall watch the next episode though, i felt really comfortable watching it, as though i was in the home myself. Earl character could get tiring, but his already come out of a couple of one liners that raised a smile. SEX PUDDING.
Script was a bit preachey, buy i everything that was said i agree with so ...

I enjoyed it, it's not really a comedy though it's to depressing to be a comedy although there was a couple of chuckles to be had with the tadpoles and telling the jobs worth councillor to fuck off, I don't like the sex craved character though he seems miss placed in the setting of the show. Overall I found it an enjoyable watch and will be tuning in to the next episode.
Thought this was great. Can't wait for the next one
I enjoyed it more than the pilot too, looking forward to the next one now.
But God damn everything Gervais does is kind of 'The Office'-esque, character line delivery and timing, the looks to the camera, Tim and Brent popped into my head on numerous occasions throughout the show.
Thought the sex pest character was quite funny, but didn't think it was as good as either the office or Extras. Carl is a bit wooden imo.

Watched the first one and really didn't find it funny at all. Loved the office and Extras and the early Idiot Abroad's but Gervais has lost it now imo. Used to like Pilkington but novelty has worn off for me now.

The Kevin guy just grates. Not sure what he is supposed to add. He's just a bit of a nuisance and distracts from the rest.

7 ounces of blood sausage, comin at ya
I'm really loving Derek. A hell of a lot more than the pilot, actually. Gervais seems to have toned down his character which has helped, and they're definitely going for "heart warming" rather than hilarity. I think it's pitched perfectly and there have been some really poignant moments thus far.
Completely agree with the comments about Kevin though. Seems a really random, pointless character and ever so out of place. Can only assume they have something up their sleeves for him as everything else is so rounded.
Delivery of the last line in the last episode was utter genius by the way.
Kevin is hilarious!
I'm sorry, but writing twat on the back of a crab is very, very funny. If it weren't for him there wouldn't be much "comedy" left in the programme.
Don't get me wrong, I think he has some great "individual" moments but they just don't seem to fit in with the rest of the show.

Agreed. I don't know what he adds - he's just an annoying, unfunny bastard. Rest of the programme is pretty good though.

Kevin and karl pilkington's character play off each other though and their arguments/comments are brilliant. Without Kevin I don't think it would be no where near as funny.

I am having problems seeing Gervais as not Gervais. I think he actually should have cast someone else in the part. He is just not working as Derek for me.
It also feels a bit weird that mega rich international celebrity Gervais has produced something about people who do lots of stuff for others but get little reward doing it. It's almost like the polar opposite of what a very successful celebrity is. Still what do I know maybe Gervais does lots for charity etc.
57 seconds in.
Just watched this weeks episode on catch up. Really loving this show at the moment. Perfect balance of comedy and heartfelt moments. Not finding it offensive as some people have
I'm not on board with all the controversy that surrounds this show, Gervais has made some valid points that the character is whatever he says it is. Makes sense.
It still doesn't make it exceptional though. I understand that it's such a change of pace from previous projects, but the episodes are very similar in terms of plot/arc. This is fine is you're talking about a 24 episode season, but with 6 episodes total it's much harder to get away with.
They've used the same plot device twice on a number of occasions. The rapping guy and the slightly chavvy girl are basically the same. The two obnoxious relatives of residents. Karl's character having a hero moment and verbally dressing someone down, all used twice.
Just to be clear, I don't think it's a bad show. I'm completely emotionally involved in some episodes and the pilot was fantastic, but I can't help but suspend my disbelief when things are recycled like that.
Awww, last episode was terribly manipulative on the emotions, but God dammit it worked, I had a big ole bit of dust in my eye by the end.
Muff... That's it.

Shouldn't have watched the ep tonight. My dads funeral is tomorrow and I am now a blubbering mess.

Last episode was outstanding.
Oh wow, didn't like that last episode.
I kind of got the point after 2 minutes. Then it preached on and on for 20 more minutes. Some bits were emotive in isolation, but the constant ramming of it all down our throats was so over the top. I've not really rated the show that highly but I've enjoyed the series for the duo of Kev and Doug, but a couple of moments aside they weren't really in this episode Kev: Muff.
Incidentally, anyone watch that sketch show after? My god that was bad.

I hated Kevin at first, but the last episode really gave you an insight into the character and why he is how he is. I loved it. It was a great end to the season.
One of the best shows on television for a long time, Ricky Gervais is so good at understanding real life situations, relationships and emotion.

Cheesy but powerful shit. I blame Coldplay.
While the poignancy and sentimentality feel overly contrived at times, I really enjoyed this! Much better than Life's Too Short.
I've just started watching this on 4od for the first time. Only got series three so watched ep1 and midway through 2 now. Finding it surprisingly good. Funny and heartfelt. Thing is is I really don't get gervais character and even though the show is named after him I think so far it would be better if he wasn't in it. He's just being Ricky gervais, again, and mugging constantly to the camera. Maybe I just don't understand yet.
