To be shown on April 12 on Channel 4.

Derek Noakes, to be played by Gervais, is described by BAFTA as "a tender, innocent man whose love for his job and the people he cares for shines through".

"He's 49 years old and loves animals, Rolf Harris, Jesus, Deal or No Deal, Million Pound Drop and Britain's Got Talent - but his main hobby is autograph hunting," added the description.

Derek is by no means a one-man show. Karl Pilkington gives an effortlessly funny performance as Dougie, Derek's friend and landlord. Given that this is the Idiot Abroad star's first acting role, the character really is a thinly veiled version of Pilkington himself - even down to the "alwight"s.

    Preview up on DS:

    Probably the biggest miscasting ever.

I wonder if it will feature cameos of Gervais's famous mates as people that Derek tries to get autographs from?

Reading that preview made it sound fucking terrible.

How many shows does he have on TV now? Every time I turn it on, I see his fat face.

I have to say gervais in the xmas episode of extras - where he is 'tender and innocent' (the bit on live tv where opens up to his women friend (Ashely?) is probably one of his greatest momemts as a actor and writer. He is a pretty one dimensional actor, but those couple of mins i was genuinely taken back.

Still though life too short was desperatley dissapointing for the most part, so hopefully this will be a bit better.

A part of me believes, reading that article, is that this is an attempt by Gervais to improve his public image, as most people believe him to be a bit of an arrogant, self-centred cynic.

Friend of mine got back from a press screening of this today... her reaction? Life's Too Short was funnier... make of that what you will, I certainly know what she was implying...

Shame if it is shit because I genuinely believe office was one of the best programs of our generation. Every poor effort after damages how good that was.

Defeat is not getting knocked down, but refusing to get back up.

The adverts for this look painful. An entire program of Gervais doing his "mong" face? No thanks.

However, the fact that the advert describes it as being a "comedy drama" gives me a glimmer of hope. Gervais can do the drama stuff very well.

Hopefully Life's Too Short was just a blip, but I'm not holding out much hope. Is Merchant involved in this?

I would give it a chance but the autograph hunting part definitely sounds like itís going to be featuring celebrity cameo's again which I think we could do without. Gervais has been there and done that.

It has Karl Pilkington in it though which is a plus point.

Think I'm going to take the novel approach of watching this and forming my own informed opinion.

There are a few old clips of him doing this character on youtube. He is basically doing his mong impression, possibly why he defended his use of the the word so vehemently.

I'm going to take the approach of being deeply suspicious of this, but leaving the small possibility of changing my mind and watching it if you end up posting a positive informed opinion.

Yes, I am outsourcing making my own mind up.

I like to think he pushed for this to be made because of the Twitter furore.

I don't think it will be very good, but it's worth a try.

That trailer was bizarre. Like an April Fool's joke or something, but horribly late.

I love Gervais and Co, but I'm slowly turning against him :/

Anyone ever seen the short film the TV show is based on? It's painfully unfunny.

I'm afraid he hasn't been funny for a long time. Prob since he started believing in his own hype.

This is old stuff actually. He did this character on the 11 o'clock show, before the office, and it wasn't very good then. Maybe he has had more time to refine it but it seems quite a 2 dimensional character to carry a series. Then again the main characters on all his shows have been quite 2 dimensional it's the other characters that have given things more weight or sympathy.

    Sounds like a rehashed Extras.

I really enjoyed Extra's though, so will give it a fair chance.

I think this and life is too short seem better suited as sketches.

Jesus. I think he must think that face he does is much funnier than it is. That's just... eh. I'll give it a watch, but hopes certainly aren't high.

Assuuming of course that the Karl Pilkington character isn't already an act to begin with.....

Even playing yourself is actually a very hard thing to do well. Have you never seen someone play themselves as a cameo in something and be cringe worthily bad?
