Shit. OK. I think I need help recalibrating my music taste.

I listen to this band and part of me thinks "they sound like The Verve doing Revolver era Beatles and its ace" and the other part of me thinks "it's a pretty, posh kid, with a nice voice and a rhyming dictionary, doing lame 60s pastiche".

    What's the truth here?

I'm pretty sure these guys are kind of boring and safe but they also take me back to discovering You Forgot It In People by Broken Social Scene when that first came out

The new Taylor Swift album has turned out a lot better than I was expecting, given the released tracks mostly didn't grab me. They make a lot more sense in the context of the album.

I'm still unsure about the production. It's leaning very heavily into the current EDM pop trends. When it works it really works, but there a few times when it comes off a little generic sounding. Throughout all the massive sound shifts in her career, she's somehow always sounded like Taylor, but there are points here where it becomes hard to tell.

That's after one listen anyway. I'm sure I'll have very different thoughts by the end of the weekend.

The new Converge album. Not as good as the last one but still, fantastic.

That was pretty cool. Is she any relation to Serge? Daughter maybe?

Currently listening to Ms Swift's latest magnus opus. Not digging it like 1989, sadly. Too much concentration on 'beats' and not enough on melody.

Downward Spiral. "Closer" if you want a specific track.

@RelaxedMikki yeah I initially thought Downward Spiral as well, but that might be because of the age I was when it came out, I've not heard it for a while and the relentless angst might annoy me these days. Might be better starting out with a Best Of playlist on Spotify, all their albums have some brilliant tracks and some/ lots of filler.

Their latest EP is well worth a listen though.

Simple Minds: Theme For Great Cities

I implore anyone who thinks of SM as only Don't you forget about me/alive and kicking, listen to this track (do it now on YT ;) ). It was trance before we had trance and Derek Forbes...what a fucking bass player.

Ulver - the Assassination of Julius Caesar

Great album, the bands are something else, completely different sound on every album, but always brilliant.

@Blurp yes love that charlotte gainsbourg track, there is also a worthy remix of it doing the rounds on 6music

I'm listening toteleman - repeater a lot, very loud and on repeat
And other than that revisiting the full Gomez range, fully intended to get tickets for their Manchester Bring It On 20th anniv. gig but forgot the morning they went on sale.

Not heard the remix on 6music. They play the edited version quite a bit.

@StixxUK Have you heard their new EP? There's a brilliant cover of The Power of Love on there.

    @Blurp in fact it's a soulwax remix

I love 6music ... until tom Ravenscroft comes on, his music taste (and record of the week suggestions) is a bit out there for my liking.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

I know nowt about them other than they've just released this for free for anyone to download, press, sell, publish etc. which is quite remarkable. And they're Australian. Currently 3 tracks in, seems like proggy, psychedelic rock.

Missed this earlier but I'm happy someone mentioned it; I only discovered this song decades after I first knew about Simple Minds and I was quite blown away. Particularly since much electronic music I know "borrowed" from that song in some way.
I've been much more inclined to forgive the band for the poppy cheesiness of their earlier mainstream work since.

Everything from the Belfast Child era onward should still be flung into a black hole though.
