Decent reviews for pretty much every shmup released on 360 is making me think I should give one of these bullet hell things a try, having not played once since SWIV / R Type back on the Amiga.

From what I can work out, these seem to be the ones to choose between, so any thoughts on the best place to start, bearing in mind I have 30 something reactions, rather than teenager ones?

    disc

    Deathsmiles
    Dodonpatchi Resurrection

    XBLA

    Ikaruga
    Guwange
    Radiant Silvergun
    Sine Mora
    Bangai - O
    Strania

Give Deathsmiles a go. It's dirt cheap now and one of the bosses is a cow called Mary.

In Deathsmiles you can adjust the difficulty of individual stages (except the final stage) and it's relatively gentle on the lowest setting.

DoDonPachi has a "novice" mode that doesn't FYUTA quite as roughly. I managed to get to the final stage on a single credit and I'm shit.

    So get those two.

Of the ones Ive played Deathsmiles I absolutely detested - personally I wouldnt recommend it although it seems like Im in the minority.

Bangai-O = Marmite game. Personally I loved it - looks are deceptive though, its not really a bullet hell shooter, more of a puzzle game.

Ikaruga - fantastic game but very high difficulty. Try the trial - that should tell you all you need to know.

I also enjoyed Galaga Legions (the first one not DX) although again 'try before you buy'.

You could try Omega Five (Hudsonsoft i believe),an early arcade shooter, pretty old school and fun.

Also,i'd give Geometry wars 2 a go if you don't have it.It's an asteroid clone, not a shmup as such, but is pretty amazing!

I've already got GW2 and Rez, along with a few XBLIG shooters (Prismatic Solid / Groov / radiangames stuff) so it's more one of the Treasure / Cave type games I'm looking for I think.

Deathsmiles certainly getting the most recommendations so far, and only £7.99 on Amazon, so definitely tempting...

The likelihood of me ever actually playing Deathsmiles again is actually, probably, zero.

    Have mine if you want.

I found deathsmiles okay, but nothing special.I prefer the old style shooter rather than the bullet hell stuff if i'm honest.

For 8 quid and your fondness for that sort of game,i'd say give it a try!

It was £3 in game the other day. Worth having a look there.

Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga are a must for anyone wanting to get into shooters. Their availability on XBLA for a reasonble price makes their purchase even better considering the ludicrous amounts the original Saturn/DC versions go for.

I was in the exact same state of mind one year ago, except that Axelay on SNES was the last shmup I spent time with (fantastic game).

So I bought deathsmiles because of recommendations, and I always pick retail over digital when given the choice, and 1 year later I absolutely don't know what to do with this game. The gameplay is ridiculously deep, but the game is so short (around 45 minutes) that you have to replay the same levels a zillion times in order to get better, or just observe a strict "zero continues" policy that's a bit too frustrating for me (and I cleared NGB and NG2 on master ninja, meaning I'm not easily frustrated). And there's always the temptation to just put infinite continues on to get the easy achievements quickly, which would give me a cheap and easy 600+ extra points but would probably ruin the experience.

It's a great gamer's game IMO, but I think I have a problem with the gothic lolita witch theme, too. Great soundtrack, nice art, but I don't know,it just feels a bit awkward. I liked Bayonetta, and onechanbara was a nice guilty pleasure, but this aspect of deathsmiles is a bit, I don't know. Not saying it's wrong or perverse or DOA extreme volleyball, but you might want to try before you buy.

Seems to go with the territory.

It also has laughably bad voice acting.

XBLIG 'Shoot 1up' is pretty good for 80msp.

Instead of having lives, you collect extra ships which are on screen simultaneously. You can then choose whether you want to expand them out or pull them in for tighter navigation. This in turn affects the spray of your fire and the width of your big ass blast beam (for want of a better description).

It's not too bullet hellish either, unless you ramp the difficulty setting up.

You might also like 'Vampire Rage' which is another 80msp indie.

    @dancingrob

I am a casual gamer and just want to relax when playing games, bear that in mind.

Deathsmiles has enough variety in the characters and a chosen path through the stages you play through including order of difficulty. This gives it good replay value, and it is the shmup I've completed the most. Not difficult to play through either if you don't want it to be.

Ikaruga has 5 levels (I think) and they are not very long if you don't care about score or difficulty. More of a job to get the most out of it and not very casual.

    Other opinions:
Don't bother with R-type, it's extremely unforgiving if you ever make a mistake.

Really enjoying Hard Corps:Uprising. Not through this yet, ignore the comments about difficulty, you can go through one stage at a time and upgrade things to make it casual. The variety in levels put a smile on my face, and the absurd situations. Joyous.

Consider Metal Slugs, they look great fun - though back-loggery means I don't have them.

So: Hard Corps:Uprising - demo is a fun play-through too.

Anyone have anything else to suggest ?

ended up picking up both Deathsmiles and Dodonpatchi resurrection, as both were cheap.

Tried Deathsmiles this lunchtime, and very swiftly realised just how much work it will take to become any good at this. Rather lost count of the number of continues I used, despite playing on the lowest level on Xbox360 mode throughout. Still absolutely no idea what you are supposed to do on those levels where the screen is covered in bullets, so might have to watch some youtube I think!

Anyone played Space Invaders Infinity Gene?

Noticed it's on sale at 400 points this week, and seemed suitable for this thread from a quick blast on the demo last night...

Trouble Witches Neo is currently on sale for 400MSP in the Deal of the Week for Gold-like people.

havent tried Space Invaders Infinity Gene (yet),
but like said before in this tread: Metal Slug 3 and Trouble Witches Neo are very good arcade shmups on XBLA, this week both on Deal of the Week for only 400 msp a piece, bargain!!

You can switch soundtrack to Japanese voices on Trouble Witches to erase annoyance a bit

Quite fancy a bit of a shooter right now, so I'll demo a few of these current deals I reckon.

As my advancing years have started to take their toll on my already shonky reaction times, just wondering if any of these are slightly more forgiving than the others, for a cack handed old geezer like myself?

I tried demos last night for Metal Slug 3, KOF Sky Stage, Space Invaders IG and Trouble Witches Neo and being the fussy old duffer that I am rejected them all.

KOF sky stage – a bullet hell that only uses a third of the screen. My eyes!
Trouble Witches Neo – too bright, too noisy, too cluttered. Again – my eyes!
Metal Slug – still a classic but I had this on Xbox and it’s a bit over-familiar. Didn’t look as good in HD as I hoped.
Space Invaders IG – didn’t like the ‘feel’ of it.

Ended up buying 2 indie games – Infinity Danger and Decimation X – both good in short doses.

There is too much bullet hell around these days for my liking – its such a niche genre, very few can make a decent fist of it.

I also have shonky old man reaction times, and have found Deathsmiles reasonably forgiving. You can have infinite continues, meaning I've seen the end of the game, and it also has various levels within the game. Sticking to level 1, I think I've made it through the first 4 or 5 levels without a continue, so my current target is to get all the way to the boss without using one. Can't see me ever getting any further, but who knows.

It also dishes out achievements by the bucketload if that's your thing!

    still loving Sine Mora

Couldn't't get into any of the others. But Sine Mora just feels right somehow. Maybe wait for a sale if you have resisted an instabuy after the demo though...

I have old man reactions but have still managed 67th in the world on one of the score attack leaderboards 67th out of 170!
