Don't you just press the blue button to swap between points and money? Been a while since I bought anything right enough.

I bought a PS3 on a whim and was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by a mature and non-patronising menu system.

Totally agree about the awful new dash. I thought maybe after a few months I'd get used to it, like I did the old 'new' ones.

Nope, it's still crap. The functionality and ease of use is still worse than before, it's not been alleviated any degree by knowing which menu within menu within menu within menu what you are looking for is in.

    XMB + MS's online strucure = bliss.

It lovely switching on the 360, firing up a game, and being greeted with a single update that literally takes 5 seconds to download. Compared to firing up one of my PS3 games and being greeted with 5 updates which have to ALL be downloaded one at a time, taking about 20 minutes altogether.

At times it felt like being a Speccy gamer again with all the waiting before you can actually just play the damn game. A lot of the time now I just refuse the updates and play offline.

New Dash *is* shite, that's true. There are consistent rumours that MS are going to drop the points system, BTW, and Games On Demand are already purchasable with cash rather than points.

I thought I'd get used to it, but I didn't. I disliked it so heavily I stopped playing my 360 as much and didn't buy a single Arcade game or piece of DLC. Then I gave the console to my sister - she'll get a lot more use out of it than I will now :)

I know it's silly, but it's more what about what the Dash represents - that they want to bring stuff that isn't gaming to the fore, when the reason I liked my 360 so much was the fact it always put gaming first. If they want the follow that path then that's fine, but it'll be without any of my money. Which is a moot point giving I don't really have any except the occasional cheap downloadable game on other formats ;)

I don't to use Facebook or any of that on 360. I didn't mind on the last Dash where it had it's own little row and that was it, but now it feels like it's of more importance that playing games. Still some great stuff coming out though, but my Dad (and now my sister) has a 360 if I'm desperate.

I'll probably buy a new console somewhere down the line, but right now I'd probably go for a PS3 again as it still feels like a gaming machine to me (plus that EVE FPS thing looks awesome).

There are loads of good sites doing instant points (I've used all of these):

    http://xboxliveuk76.com/MS_points_2100_EuropeUK-25.html
    http://www.gamesbites.com/Instant_Microsoft_Points/2100points

Discounts are pathetic these days though. Not far off what Microsoft charges.

There again, they'd probably have red ringed by now. ;D
My cousin has a modded one that still runs on the blades. It was a really sluggish interface, even offline.
My 360 has never been online, but I occasionally lend it to a mate who does connect to Live. The second interface was a bit better than blades, though it did piss me off my insisting on starting with the page with only the welcome video on. It's now got the current interface which is a fucking pain and so much effort to sign in if you don't auto sign in.

You could make that second one start on a different page you know... there was an option tucked away to turn that welcome screen off, I'm sure of it.

Ah, I forget - may not have been the welcome video, but it was something pretty useless to me as an offline gamer whatever it was.

The new dash definitely isn't as good as the last, but I have got used to it, I can at least find stuff now (but only because I know where it is). It certainly isn't the abomination some people are trying to paint it as. I do appreciate that on boot up the cursor is already on "play game" and quick play is right there underneath.

I do tend to use the guide blades an awful lot more though.

It's pretty awful. I used to browse around the games marketplace before, but now I just can't be bothered. I either "Play Game" (yes, also appreciate that being the starting icon) or shoulder button a dozen times to get to the system to free up more space before an install.

There's another positive I noticed when I was looking at the marketplace a few weeks ago FOR THE LAST TIME EVER IN MY LIFE which is that you can't buy things accidentally by hammering A a few times, because Cancel is the default choice instead of Buy Now. Terry's Chocolate Oranges are available from Rawlinsons.

The most bewildering change is the Y, X functions on Game Options that used to be Eject and Install, and now are Install and Eject. The most pointless change I've seen.

the thing for me is: they old dash used to be a place i liked to hang out, just seeing what my friends where doing, seeing if there where new inside xbox videos available, check out Marketplace for new stuff available.

You could just flick left analog stick up and down to get from category to category without pushing any buttons. Like strolling, very easy. If you wanted to investigate further you pressed green A button (confirm) = logical. In Marketplace you could then see all new additions per subcategory (maximum of 3 boxes), this way you see if there was any new stuff added.

It was all very easy and logical, although some people didnt like the fact that categories in dash very vertically placed instead of horizontally.

Nowadays you have to confirm everything. i want to go up, right, right, right to Marketplace, there i have to go in every subsegment to see if anything new has been added.

It used to be like a mall where you just leisurely walked around and just looked at the new stuff available they were showing in the windows.
Now you have to go inside every fcukin store in the mall just to see if there is anything new available.

    -

Also the friends channel used to be a place inside the 'mall'. You went through that place to go to another category. If you didnt like avatarshit then you wouldnt look at it, if you did stay you could see all your friends available, see if they where online, what they were playing, how they looked, what they wear, what Avatar items/animations they had, if they were in party, who else were in that party etc etc.
You could navigate that very easily.

Nowadays you see maximum of 3 friends in your dash. These avatars will still show even if they are allready went offline. So you cant trust the status of it anymore.
Want to see more friends, go over to friends section in dash, confirm it with A button and see row of Avatar friends just standing there. No personality anymore, no animations or items are being shown there no more. Only when you investigate further by pressing A button on character you will see that person's Avatar animation/item (if the got one). So there is no need to buy new animations/items from Marketplace anymore (if you allready were into that): good job MS, you just killed your own revenu for (pointless perheps) virtual items (so actually almost free money), just like they killed of the reason of paying for themes. They just fcuk themes up with dashboard updates. So you cant trust your virtual item to have the same usability as before. Its a trustissue (for me).

Buying Avatar items or animations or themes from a game im really into, or that looks funny or just for personelising appearance was something i kinda liked doing with leftover points, i wasnt ashamed of spending some on that. But if they gonna cripple the usage of those virtual items (that worked perfectely before)through updates then they show me i cant trust virtual stuff no more because they (or the new team responsible for new changes in dash) doesnt understand how users actually use these items and what it stands for.

They lost some of the fun element that was present in last dash.

American dash has got new update in Marketplace for the better, still bad, but little bit improved in usabillity. Why we Europeans/Japanese wont get it allready i dont know (same as USA got Gears of War 3 demo month ago, we still dont have it. Why??)

Long rant is long. Sorry again

So I haven't turned on my 360 in maybe 5 months. After 6 months of owning it it started to misread discs and generally start to fall apart, so I tend to use it for certain games only where I know it is much better than PS3. (eg Bayonetta)

To be fair I would have got rid of it a while ago, but really want to carry on my Mass Effect and Dragon Age saves. Anyway. turned it on today, had to do loads of updates and stuff, but what the fuck have they done to the interface? The blade system used to be decent, not is is some fucking horrible mess where they only show 3 or 4 items on a screen, and navigating is a nightmare.

Eventually I made my way to the Mass Effect 3 screen, so I can download the DLC in readyness for the game arriving tomorow, and then I realised just why I always use the PS3 for DLC rather than Live. I want the DLC, it costs 840 points. I have 40 points already. I can buy 500 or 1000 points. And that's it.

Have they really still not introduced a fucking system where you can buy what you want? I don't want 100 fucking points, even Sony who are unbeleivably shit at anything to do with online will let you just buy the fucking thing you want.

tl:Dr - Why is the 360 interface so shit suddenly? And why can I not just buy the fucking one thing I want?
Stop buying day 1 DLC please, it just makes things shitty for everyone.

    Ta.

MS have invested 300m in first party development, the only problem is it's all aimed at the next gen. So the games are coming just not for the 360.

The “you own the old console, we no longer care about you” won’t get them very far. They could ditch the old Xbox with little issue once the 360 came out, this time around people won’t be so pleased if all the software support dries up before the new machine is even out.

depends whether you think most people care about exclusives or not?

Working on the basis that their main value from a corporate perspective is as system sellers, it makes sense to focus on the nextbox, whilst Bioshock Infinite / Tomb Raider/ FIFA13 / COD13 etc will still mean there are plenty of games for current 360 owners.
