I tend to think of Core gamers and Hardcore gamers as two different types. The core gamers are the ones who will play and enjoy a breadth of different titles and support a lot of originality. The hardcore tend to be rabidly loyal to one or two brands and play very little outside that, and that's where a lot of the arguments about entitlement and trash talking come into the equation. In that sense, casual and hardcore aren't too far apart from each other. I think most gamers, at least most on this site, sit fairly firmly in the "core" camp.

Or, more relevantly, why do games have to have all this introspective handwringing about gamer elitism every time some one dares criticise something remotely mainstream, when really they're not any better or worse than anybody else?

I'd say the problem comes when you're a 'core' gamer. Stay casual, stay loose, stay disease free... :)

I only have a few hours per week to play games. Therefore, I stick to the following series: Fifa, CoD, UFC and F1. All my friends play the same games, you know what you're getting with these games and they always reach a certain level of shine and quality.

Why are casual gamers villified by core gamers? Are they considered detrimental to gaming as a hobby?
That actually makes you a populist gamer

I'm now confused about my place in the gaming fraternity.

I like Angry Birds and even enjoy some pop music...but not rap or hip-hop. Does that make me a rascasual?

I used to like those types of game but don't have the time to invest in storylines anymore. Movies typically last 2 hours, narrative driven games last as much as 4 times that these days. It's a crazy time sink!

Don't worry, I don't think it's a term used much these days. It was used to describe gamers who only bought into popular sports, war shooter and sometimes other heavily marketed franchises. Casual gamers don't typically play the likes of FIFA and CoD, think more Brain training, Wii Fit, Start the Party, singstar, Farmville and Words with Friends

    @Razz

I liked Brain Training, Singstar and Words With Friends... I also liked Demons Souls and Skyrim, and games from all points in-between these two extremes!

I hate these pointless classifications - it limits people's experiences as they're scared of being seen playing something that doesn't fit their 'image'.
  • Deleted user 6 March 2012 14:42:03
That makes you a core gamer with piss poor taste.

Nah, I'm just fucking with you! you're alright!

o_O The term "Casual" applies to people that play games like Brain Training, Singstar and Words With Friends exclusively.

What this thread needs is a questionnaire so we can then group everyone from 'hardcore' to Angry Birds.

Q1. Have you ever shouted racial/sexist/homophobic abuse at another online gamer?
Q2. What does the red bird do?

    ...Done!

I'm a old school (so old school I even spell it correctly) hardcore gaming mofo. 36 hours min per day on Dark/Demon Souls, I don't even use the saves on these games. I'm so hardcore that I play games in the nude using my John Thomas as an wii style waggle wand.
    OH YEAH

Hardcore gamer is such an unfortunate term, makes it sound like you all play Battle Raper or something.

Then again I'm not sure what "casual" pornography would involve either.

I think the term "casual" has been redefined in the last few years due to the Wii and Angry Birds. It did used to be people that played a bit of FIFA after the pub, but a combination of games like FIFA becoming more hardcore, and much much more casual games becoming popular have shifted the definition a bit.

It's all bullshit anyway, but for me someone who plays a bit of CoD and FIFA is not a casual gamer anymore.

    More serious and obvious answering

There’s nothing wrong with liking casual games, but I do get what people’s issue with casual gaming in general is. There is a problem that a certain type of casual game is incredibly quick and easy to make, and can guarantee a high amount of sales. Say for example, a cat stroking game on the Wii.

When you have an option to make money easily like this, it takes away the incentive to develop games that would require more work being put into them, and in that sense the casual gaming market has arguably damaged the hardcore market.

Just don't bother with labels, they're pointless. If you need to describe what kind of gamer you are give a few examples of games you enjoy. Simple!
