Anyone picked up the weird crystal crew member?

Found him in a damaged stasis pod - he told me to go to the Rock homeworlds, which was a little pointless as I was in sector 7 at the time...
So the third time I found this little mission chain - I DID IT - ridiculously lucky to get it as it takes about 5 encounters with one sector-specific part :D

Reward - Crystal Ship - Bravais

    Further details - Crew - 2 crystal, 2 human | Weapons - Crystal Burst I, Heavy Crystal I | Augment - Crystal Vengeance

The day charity died - NEVER FORGET

(the mic was OK in the end)

A good thing to note about the boss is that the weapons are all in their own little cubbyholes, so if you take one out and kill the crewman that's in there, the weapon is effectively dead from there on. Another thing is if you kill their oxygen, everyone dies, you just have to last out while they're choking.

Got to round 2 of the boss and couldn't get through his shield having ran out of missiles. Miserable cunt.

Time for one more go before bed.

Gonna missile the fuck out of the oxygen and rely on cloaking this time round, see if that works as well it sounds like it should.

Bah, I also got up to the 2nd round with the boss, (having foolishly thought I'd won), got it down to 1/4 hull but then the chaos got too much.
End score 2561 on hard :\
Did it in the Engi ship. I really need to unlock more I think.

I've been up to the second round of the boss far too many times now, it's just depressing how quickly I get decimated.

Yeah didn't want to post about second part of boss and spoil it for anyone. I'm thinking maybe try taking out drone control soon as.

What you need is a teleporter. When the fight starts, send 2 guys into the weapons rooms, killing the crew manning it and destroying the gun itself. You want to kill the missle- and ion launchers first. After that, if you have fire weapons, kill all crew members, except for one or two. That will make the next parts a lot easier. Do not kill all crew members, or the fight will become a lot harder.

That's a good tactic that. Once you damage a weapon, and kill the crewman manning it, it's out for the entire fight.

I finally beat it last night, and after four times where I've gotten thrashed I somehow managed to totally kick its arse in the Engy ship. Three anti-ship drones and an ION cannon to suppress its shields just picked it to pieces.

Got to the end again, this time with my massive new weapon, some other kick-ass weapons, fast-regen shields, two repair drones and other goodies. Got boarded. Lost all O2. Fucked it all up and died without getting near the boss. On easy.

    Fucksake.

@SuperBas It's not the weapons I have a problem with, it's the swarm of drones it throws at me.

I've only just noticed that each ship has it's own little set of achievements, which is a nice little touch. Also noticed that the Engi ship is far easier to defend using the 'Bastion Med Bay' technique.

Got this last night, played it quite a bit today! I am an absolutely terrible starship captain but I'm having great fun. Each time I think I've figured something out I invariably get killed on the next jump.

If you kill the crew (save for 1) in the first round, then in the second round you can send a couple of guys into its drone control to destroy it, lowering the amount of drones that come after you. The extra ones aren't permanent, use cloak to avoid most damage from those.

Good tips & worth a read. Probably not for captain's-in-waiting but enough to nudge budding ensigns in the right direction.

It gets a little repetitive after a while and whilst fun, the reliance upon luck to a large degree sort of limits the strategic choice of things.

Yeah. I find myself thinking 'may as well just restart now' quite often, when 2/3s through and stuck without enough missiles or enough drones, or with vanilla weapons. Just no point taking on the boss if you're not well specced.

Err, where's my morning gone!? =) This is brill!

I bought it straight from the ftl game website - will my copy of the game auto update or am I gonna have to download new versions as and when and use them to load my save games?

It's great to be excited like this for a game!

@gammonbanter No idea about auto updating. May have to download a patch or something. Buying from the site also gives you a steam key which does auto-update, which is the route I went.

Beat the final boss yesterday, with a Torus - two ion beams, anti-ship, defense and anti-personnel drones, a breach bomb (worked wonders on their shield compartment) plus a transporter to beam two Rockmen over. Now I'll have to do the same on normal.

    A brilliant game.

Just got a victory with three anti-ship drones on normal in the Engy ship...
    WHoooo!
I come to hangar to find a group of ships I didn't even know I had. Excellent.

I did the same last night! At long bloody last. On easy. Bugger-all skill involved really. Just managed to pick up enough scrap and got the right bits I wanted. Usually, it's not enough scrap and the wrong stuff on sale. I don't know how I'll beat it on Normal, but the Federation cruiser certainly looks like it might help.

I finally finished this last night. It was that lovely Breach II that did most of the work, blasting apart the things I didn't want to work anymore. still got hammered though, only made it by the skin of my teeth.

I also cheated a bucketload. I'm not even sorry. Didn't even help really, only won because I got lucky and picked up the Breach II.

Spurs beat ManU, Europe wins the Ryder cup in the most amazing comeback of all time and to top things off, three Eurogamers beat FTL on the same night. Truely, the most amazing weekend of British sport.

    :D

How do you cheat on FTL?
Also, what's the EG highscore so far?

I've had a few plays with the Federation Cruiser. The artillery beam is powerful, but takes a fucking long time to charge, it only really becomes useful when fully upgraded (and that's not cheap). In the early game, not having missiles to take care of shields is pretty crippling.

Have to quit every time you want to save is annoying! Still ove it.

@Bremenacht I imagine using Cheat Engine to find and buff the values for hull, power, and scrap is probably how.

Cheating is dishonourable though. Don't do it! Still doesn't really help though. For me, the final battle always seems to come down to how accurate my first couple of volleys are. If the attacks don't hit, death is guaranteed. Cheating helps somewhat as you can have a back-up plan, but it still doesn't help you get the best weapons in stores you pass, or the awesome weapon pre-loader, or a good crew.
